SYNOPSIS
Unseasonably cooler and drier air continues to affect the area today. A warming trend kicks off Tuesday and Wednesday, before another cold front knocks temperatures back down by Thursday.
Weekend looks to get warmer each day, with high pressure drying out the forecast again.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
Mid level clouds this morning exist above the inversion that plagued yesterday's forecast. The moisture in this layer is likely to persist into the afternoon with mid level clouds becoming broken late morning, but hanging around in some capacity into the early afternoon. Southeastern NC and the immediate coast may see some relief both this morning and into the afternoon which will allow temperatures to climb into the lower 80s with most areas in the upper 70s to near 80.
High pressure settles overhead this afternoon as winds become light and variable. Overnight low temperatures are likely to drop into the upper 50s to near 60.
SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/
Upper low spinning off the east coast of Maine retrogrades a bit and comes onshore a bit by Wednesday. Though the main trough remains north of the area, multiple shortwaves break off from the broader circulation and sweep through the Carolinas.
Offshore high pressure maintains SSW flow, with a breezy day expected Tuesday, as the shortwaves there look a bit more frontal in nature (though weak). This brings only a modest chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. Offshore high pressure supplies warmer and more moist air to come in.
Highs Tuesday in the mid-to-upper 80s inland, lower 80s at the coast. Look for a few degrees warmer on Wednesday, with some inland spots possibly hitting 90 degrees.
Wednesday evening, the main low near Maine slightly shifts southward, digging the trough further along. This allows the extra energy necessary to push a cold front through the area, increasing rain chances. Lows in the low-to-mid 60s.
LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
Cold front from Wednesday night continues to bring chances for showers and thunderstorms Thursday, taping off by the evening as the front moves offshore. Northerly shift in the winds becomes evident by early Thursday morning, bringing the unseasonably cool weather back into the fold. Highs may struggle to hit 80 on this day. Good news is that temperatures will be moderating throughout the weekend, with high pressure keeping a drying trend in play. Look for the mid 80s on Friday, hitting the upper 80s by Saturday. These are near seasonal norms for early June.
AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
VFR this morning and today. Mid level cloud cover is possible inland this morning. Light and variable winds this afternoon, becoming SW this afternoon inland, E/SE along the coast.
Extended Outlook... Mainly VFR conditions are expected later Monday through Thursday.
MARINE
Through Tonight...Ongoing SCA conditions will continue this morning as an area of high pressure builds into the area. This surge of NE winds will gradually end just after sunrise. SCA conditions will end quickly as these winds weaken. High pressure settles over the area this afternoon with light and variable winds. Residual seas will be 3-5 feet today. Quiet overnight due to weakening winds and recovering seas 2-3 feet.
Tuesday through Friday...Southwesterly winds look to be the trend Tuesday and Wednesday, with higher gradient winds expected on Tuesday in particular. Some gusts may hit 25kts, but it doesn't look to be consistent enough of a threat for a Small Craft Advisory at this time. Seas hold at 2-4ft from here.
Wednesday night into Thursday, a cold front moves through, allowing winds to veer to the NW and then NNE at 10-15kts. After the front, seas back down slightly to 2-3ft. Veering winds to the east and then southeast expected Friday, as high pressure comes back into the fold. Seas may decrease to 1ft closer to shore, and 2-3ft out 20nm from shore.
