Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 828 PM PST Tue Dec 5 2023

SYNOPSIS
Weakening high pressure aloft, and an incoming Pacific trough, will flip our winds back onshore, beginning the return of marine air tonight, with possible coastal fog. Strengthening sea breezes will spread cooling and humidity well inland on Wednesday. By Thursday, strong westerly winds will drive further cooling across the mountains and into the deserts. Winds will flip again on Friday, becoming northerly and gusty below the passes and canyons. This will return Southern California to Santa Ana conditions again this weekend, complete with locally gusty northeast winds, low humidity, and above average daytime temperatures west of the mountains.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

Skies were clear over SoCal at 8 PM PST, but just to the south, along the coast, an apparent area of fog was nearly stationary, with a bit of a northward drift. The leading edge was about 45 miles south of San Diego. We have already seen a sharp increase in sfc dewpoints over SW San Diego County, with a light south drift to the coastal winds. The latest HRRR runs have indicated some fog development in this area later tonight, so provided drainage winds don't force the moisture back offshore, there is a chance we could get some dense fog into San Diego later tongiht into Wed morning.

The Zone forecast has already been updated to include some patchy fog, but also to increase the westerly winds over the mts/deserts coming in for Thursday. It looks like we could get another one of those events where Advisory strength west winds Thu/Fri morning, turn NW, then N-NE Friday into Saturday.

From previous discussion...

The dominant ridge begins to break down and progress eastward overnight, becoming replaced by an amplified trough approaching the Pacific Northwest. Positive height anomalies remain but will be weaker, and winds will turn back onshore in the afternoon. This will promote cooler highs across the coast and valleys with highs in the 70s, and slightly warmer temperatures in the mountains and deserts, reaching the upper-50s to 60s in the mountains, approaching 70 degrees in the High Desert and approaching 80 degrees in the lower deserts.

The weakening upper-level low pushes through the Pacific Northwest on Thursday and quickly moves through the Great Basin on Friday.
For Southern California, highs will fall to near seasonal averages for the coast through the mountains, and slightly above normal in the deserts. Gusty onshore winds also increase on Thursday in the mountains and deserts, likely peaking Thursday night through Friday morning, when local gusts up to 55 mph will be possible along mountain crests and through wind-prone passes. In addition, the marine layer will briefly rebuild, with night and morning low clouds possible across the coast and valleys on Thursday and Friday.

The transient troughing pattern will rapidly be replaced by another building ridge across the western United States Friday afternoon into Saturday. Winds will turn offshore Friday morning or afternoon and strengthen. Winds initially will come from the north to northeast, favoring the strongest winds below the Cajon Pass and the Santa Ana mountains on Friday, before turning more easterly Friday night into Saturday, when the winds will strengthen farther south into the mountains of Riverside and San Diego Counties. The weakening trend of the ensembles continue this afternoon, and this event looks to be a weak to moderate event.
Winds likely remain offshore through the weekend, but the stronger winds will generally only occur in wind-prone areas.

Slow warming will occur on Friday and Saturday west of the mountains, as cold air advection leads to slight cooling in the mountains and deserts. More substantial warming develops on Sunday, when highs will range 4-10 degrees above seasonal averages region-wide, and little change is expected through early next week.

Coast
Confidence is increasing for very low stratus/fog along the San Diego County coast, especially from KSAN south to the Mexican border. There is around a 60 percent chance at KSAN that cigs will be 400 feet or lower, with a vis of 1 mile or less between 10Z and 16Z Wed, with similar cigs/vis along the rest of the southern San Diego County coast. Stratus/fog will clear to near the coast by 17Z Wed but will likely linger at some beaches through Wed afternoon. Stratus will spread rapidly inland Wed evening with much higher bases of 800-1500 ft MSL and tops to 2000 ft MSL.

Valleys...Mostly clear skies with unrestricted vis will prevail through Wed afternoon with stratus developing Wed evening with bases 800-1500 ft MSL and tops to 2000 ft MSL with terrain restrictions developing.

Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear skies with unrestricted vis will prevail through Wed evening. Southwest/west winds will develop Wed afternoon and continue Wed evening with areas of surface gusts 25-40 knots from the mountain crests through the desert slopes.

MARINE
Patchy dense fog will bring visibility below 1 NM Wednesday morning (2 AM-noon PDT), especially south of La Jolla. Northwest winds could gust over 20 knots near San Clemente Island Thursday night and Friday morning. Otherwise, no hazardous marine weather conditions are expected through this weekend.

BEACHES
A long-period swell (17 seconds late Wednesday lowering to 14 seconds by Friday with swell heights 4-5 feet) from the west- northwest will bring elevated surf late Wednesday into Friday.
Highest surf is expected Thursday, mainly on west-facing beaches of San Diego County. Confidence is increasing that wave heights will range from 3 to 6 feet for most areas with sets to 7 feet in southern San Diego County. Beach Hazards Statement (CFWSGX) has more information.

SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
