Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 117 PM PDT Wed Oct 4 2023
SYNOPSIS
Strong high pressure over the eastern Pacific, and offshore flow, will bring much warmer weather through the end of the week. Easterly winds will be gusty at times below the passes, and along the coastal foothills, warming and drying the valleys, while sea breezes moderate coastal areas each day, along with a weak eddy at times.
Over the weekend, a weak trough will develop off the coast, starting a cooling trend, first near the coast, and then inland into next week. This will coincide with a return, and increase in coverage of night and morning low clouds and fog.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
Skies were completely clear over SoCal midday. The offshore sfc pressure gradient has been primarily from the Great Basin today, and was nearly 10 mbS late this morning from KTPH to KLAX. This has resulted in peak, local wind gusts of around 45 MPH in the most wind prone areas just below the major passes and coastal facing canyons.
It was noticeably warmer most areas at midday too, with temp jumps of 5-10F over yesterday.
A ridge is building over the West Coast today, and will be with us for the remainder of the week. With the ridge core over the PacNW, the weakness farther south gradually succumbs to a weak low approaching from the EastPac along 30N by late Friday. Besides supporting a weak coastal eddy, this low may also grab some subtropical moisture from the south, and decorate our skies with some high clouds and colorful sunrises/sets. The ridge subsequently shifts inland over the weekend, eventually giving way to more broad troughing into next week.
The main forecast concern then, is the warming that will occur over the next couple of days. The offshore flow never makes it to the coast, based on the high resolution guidance, but winds do gust well into the 40 MPH range in the favored areas below passes and canyons.
This will advect drier air into the valleys, which favors a wider diurnal temperature range each day, especially at lower elevations inland, where nocturnal winds decouple from the boundary layer.
Where some wind remains, the nights will be quite mild, with lows in the 60s. Still, with the shorter days now, and these cooler nights, the Heat Risk calculation runs a bit lower than on summer days. We do reach moderate levels in some areas, but it is marginal, and not as widespread, or persistent enough to warrant an Advisory at this time.
What this distills down to, is for warm to hot afternoons, and mild to cool nights through Saturday. After that, we begin to feel more of the low offshore, and a shallow marine layer returns this weekend, reducing the marginal Heat Risk values from west to east.
Highs in the 90s from the mesas to the coastal slopes, and 80s along the coast, tick down through the weekend and into next week. Based on current guidance, we expect highs to gradually slide back to average by Tuesday of next week, and drop further through the middle of the week.
