New Long Term

KEY MESSAGES

- Seasonably hot and humid conditions will continue today and tomorrow.

- There will be low storm chances (less than 20%) along the Red River tonight, then again tomorrow evening.

- More widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected along and ahead of a cold front from late Sunday evening into Monday. A few storms could be strong to severe with primarily a hail and damaging wind threat.

- Below-normal temperatures are then expected through most of next week with continued low rain chances.

SHORT TERM
/Issued 1249 PM CDT Fri May 23 2025/ /Through Saturday Night/

A couple of seasonably hot, humid, and breezy days are in store to start Memorial Day Weekend with afternoon highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s both today and Saturday. Mostly sunny conditions are expected through the short-term forecast period. Weak synoptic- scale ascent and modest capping will keep storm coverage quite sparse over our forecast area through the next couple of days, but isolated high-based storms developing near a dryline across West Texas each afternoon may approach our far northwestern counties both late this evening and again tomorrow evening. Any storms that make it to our forecast area will likely be in their dissipation stage as convective inhibition increases and overall instability decreases with the loss of daytime heating. However, we cannot entirely rule out a more robust core or two capable of producing marginally severe hail making it into our far northwest counties before diminishing into the overnight hours both tonight and Saturday night (less than a 20% chance).

LONG TERM
/NEW/ /Sunday and Beyond/

An active upper-level pattern and a slow-moving frontal boundary will provide the focus for daily storm chances and increased cloudiness through much of next week. Most of Sunday will remain hot and dry with isolated to scattered storm potential arriving along the Red River and north of I-20 by late Sunday evening into Sunday night. The most widespread rainfall is expected Monday morning into Monday night with most locations picking up on average 1-2 inches of rainfall by Tuesday morning. Isolated totals of 3-5" will be possible beneath training thunderstorms and could lead to localized flooding issues. Severe weather will remain a possibility as well through Memorial Day with isolated large hail and damaging wind gusts as the main threats. More specific timing and location details will be hashed out over the coming days.
Seasonably cool temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s, daily rain chances, and partly cloudy skies will then continue through the end of next week.
