New AVIATION
KEY MESSAGES
- Warm and dry conditions remain expected this week.
- Possible record high temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.
SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 205 AM CDT Mon May 12 2025
A few higher clouds may make their way in from New Mexico overnight.
Otherwise, a quiet night is expected with lows falling into the upper 40s to low 50s along with light southerly winds. Rising upper heights ahead of a ridge combined with increase SW surface flow will begin the parade of hotter temperatures this week. Highs should reach at least 90 across much of the South Plains. Generally clear skies are expected.
LONG TERM
(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 205 AM CDT Mon May 12 2025
Hot temperatures remain the theme this week. A ridge axis will move overhead Tuesday and downsloping breezy west winds will help to drive high temperatures well into the 90s, with triple digits possible across the southern Rolling Plains. Wednesday will be the windiest day of the week as a ~990 mb surface low ejects out of the Rockies. Highest westerly winds will be seen over the Rolling Plains and far SW Panhandle, potentially gusting to 45 mph during the afternoon hours. This will bring similar temperatures as Tuesday, with record highs possible both days. A series of troughs over the Mountain West will lower heights into Thursday, and along with diminishing winds will slightly cool temperatures for the remainder of the week. While storms cannot completely be ruled out off the Caprock, model trends have shifted eastward, and what little chances were being suggested previously appear to be even less favorable now.
AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 614 AM CDT Mon May 12 2025
