Morning Area Forecast Discussion
KEY MESSAGES
- Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms can be expected across the area through the beginning of next week.
- Locally heavy rainfall will remain the primary concern in any thunderstorms given the continued moist environment in place.
- Drier conditions expected over much of the area by mid week.
SHORT TERM
(Today through Sunday)
Issued at 303 AM EDT Sat May 30 2026
Current radar shows ongoing lingering showers across portions of north and central Georgia. These showers remain light, giving many areas beneficial slower rainfall versus the heavy rain rates from the afternoon. Scattered to widespread areas of low clouds and patchy fog are developing and are expected to continue through sunrise with visibilities less than 4-5SM in many areas, especially those who received quite a bit of rainfall yesterday.
For today, expecting showers and embedded thunderstorms to pick up again during the late afternoon and evening timeframe. This will be generally centered on the frontal boundary again and where it settles for the day. CAMs indicate this will be somewhere closer to northeast Georgia today for much of the activity but cannot rule out more isolated pop ups in the central and western portions of Georgia. More extensive cloud cover will also likely limit the areal coverage of thunderstorms this afternoon but with enough moisture in the area likely to still see a couple of rumbles of thunder in isolated areas. General concerns will yet again be showers in a high PWAT environment that could lead to isolated instances of flash flooding.
Sunday, rain chances push more to central and southern Georgia as the front is expected to push more towards Florida. This in conjunction with a wedge setting up over the northeast will ultimately give northern and eastern Georgia a bit of a break from rainfall chances while central Georgia continues to see rainfall. Best timing for scattered showers and thunderstorms will again be during the afternoon and evening timeframe. High temperatures Sunday will be below average in the low to mid 70s for much of the area.
LONG TERM
(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 303 AM EDT Sat May 30 2026
The same forecast will pretty much run through the early part of next week with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s and afternoon thunderstorms forming between 2-3PM and falling apart again after 10PM. No severe weather is expected, and the only real concern we continue to monitor is the potential for flash flooding; primarily in the urban areas.
For the first time in a while, we're beginning to see a pretty good sign of a pattern shift come Tuesday and into Wednesday. A cut off low out of New England will make it's way south into the mid Atlantic region, setting up High pressure down the spine of the Appalachians and into the SE. The rain should hold off then until next weekend.
AVIATION
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 200 AM EDT Sat May 30 2026
Showers continue across much of the area and are expected to continue through the next couple of hours at least. SCT IFR CIGs are becoming prevalent across the area with temporary bkn IFR likely through the overnight but especially closer to sunrise.
Should see CIGs lift through the morning and mid day to VFR by ~18z. Chance for TSRA again tomorrow ~19-23z for most sites. Winds turn to the W and then NW throughout the day before becoming VRB overnight and then turning to E by tomorrow morning.
