Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 150 AM EST Thu Nov 30 2023

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will remain centered over the Carolinas today, gradually sliding off the coast tonight. A series of low pressure systems will impact the area Friday into early next week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/
As of 150 AM Thu...Latest analysis shows 1024mb high pressure centered over the Carolinas this morning. Some areas along the coast have already seen lows this morning. HSE fell to 30 deg last evening and has now warmed up in the low 40s with light westerly flow. Today begins the grad warming trend as flow becomes more southerly and heights build. After a cool start this morning, highs will climb into the mid to upper 50s. Sct mid and high clouds through the day.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/
As of 150 AM Thu...High pressure will continue to slide off the coast overnight as low pressure system moves into the Mid-West and weak coastal trough develops along the NC coast. It should be a much milder night with increasing clouds. Lows in the mid/upper 30s inland and 40s for the beaches. Coastal trough may bring some light showers to the Outer Banks after midnight.
Increased pops slightly from previous forecast.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
As of 330 AM Wednesday...High pressure slides offshore late in the week with a more active pattern expected to develop through the weekend.

A southern stream jet becomes dominant across the southern CONUS and a series of systems lifts across the area Friday through early next week. Guidance still not in the best agreement with timing, strength and available moisture with these systems so continue to limit PoPs to chance given the differences. Temps are expected to be above normal through Monday. A northern stream shortwave digs across the Mid West and across the mid-Atlantic early next week pushing deeper moisture offshore with cool high pressure building in from the west into mid week.

AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/
SHORT TERM /through tonight/...
As of 150 AM Thu...Pred VFR conditions expected through the period with sct mid and high clouds and light winds. Ceilings begin to lower late tonight, especially along the coast as weak coastal trough develops.

LONG TERM /Friday through Monday/...
As of 330 PM Wednesday...An active pattern develops across the area Friday through the weekend with periods of showers bringing occasional sub-VFR conditions.

MARINE
SHORT TERM /through tonight/...
As of 150 AM Thu...Latest obs show W/WNW winds 5-15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt and seas 2-3 ft. High pressure will remain centered over the waters today, gradually sliding offshore tonight as low pressure approaches from the west and coastal trough develops along the NC coast. Brief W/NW winds surge 10-20 kt early this morning will diminish by mid morning with winds becoming more variable 10 kt or less. Winds overnight remain a bit challenging and heavily dependent on where trough sets up, likely varying from NE-SW 5-15 kt. Seas 1-3 ft through the period.

LONG TERM /Friday through Monday/...
As of 330 PM Wednesday...A series of low pressure systems will impact the area late in the week and this weekend.

A strong low pressure system will lift into the Ohio River Valley Friday and Friday night which will serve to tighten pressure gradients across the region and will see Sly winds increase to 15-20+ kt with seas building to 3-6 ft. SCA conditions are most probable across the coastal waters south of Oregon Inlet. An active pattern continues through the weekend with another low pressure area moving across the region late Saturday into Sunday but at this time guidance is keeping conditions below SCA criteria.
