UPDATE
Issued at 1141 AM EDT Wed Jun 18 2025
POPs have come down a bit for this afternoon. CAMs suggest showers and storms will be more isolated. NBM has clouds thinning out significantly this afternoon, CONs blend has a bit more coverage.
With fairly low POPs this afternoon, I favored the less cloud coverage solution, keeping afternoon highs on the warm side.
SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 319 AM EDT Wed Jun 18 2025
Key Messages:
1. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur today with the main threat being brief heavy downpours.
Discussion:
Broad trough over the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys has our forecast area under southwest flow. Weak disturbances within the flow will generate a few showers possibly as early as this morning a couple hours after sunrise over much of the forecast area. The model features are very subtle but CAMS indicate the possibility of that occurring. Not our of the question given the latest regional radar indicating some moderate reflectivities on radar over Middle Tennessee and north Alabama. Additional afternoon activity will also be possible as the next trough approaches the area. Locally heavy rain will be the main impact but some gusty winds with some of the heavier rain is possible.
LONG TERM
(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 319 AM EDT Wed Jun 18 2025
Key Messages:
1. Weak front will bring more rainfall Thursday.
2. Drier air filters into the region Thursday night through the weekend.
3. Heat index values will be near 100 degrees late this weekend into early next week.
Discussion: A weak frontal boundary will push through the day producing widespread rainfall across the entire area by late afternoon. Some storms will be capable of producing strong wind gusts and - you guessed it - heavy rainfall.
Dry air will finally follow in its wake Thursday night. The front will do very little to cool the daytime temperatures on Friday.
Unfortunately, the heat will build into the region on Sunday through early next week and a huge area of high pressure sits over the eastern U.S. Heat index values from 100 to 105 degrees will be possible for several TN Valley locations. Rain chances will creep back into the forecast starting Monday.
AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 651 AM EDT Wed Jun 18 2025
Ongoing showers are all west of airports. Could begin to impact KCHA over the next couple of hours and expect other showers across northeast Tennessee to remain west of KTRI this morning. Later this afternoon and early evening, like the past few days, when convection will be at its peak. Expect overall quiet pattern after sunset with VFR conditions setting up. The front will be knocking at the door close to the end of the TAF period so some showers may be in the vicinity around sunrise.
