KEY MESSAGES

1. Red Flag Warning in effect from Saturday night until Monday evening for the San Joaquin Valley and West Side Hills of the Coastal Range.

2. High Wind Warning in effect from 5 PM this afternoon until late Sunday night for the Mojave Desert Slopes.

3. Slight cooldown this weekend before warmer temperatures return next week.

DISCUSSION

Temperatures today are slightly warmer than what the Valley saw yesterday. However, there will be some cooler weather coming through this weekend as an Inside Slider tracks through the northern portion of California. As is the nature of an inside slider, there will NOT be any precipitation chances. However, there will be increased winds throughout the CWA The spots for the strongest winds will be Mojave Desert and the Desert Slopes.
As such, a High Wind Warning has been issued for the Mojave Desert Slopes from 5 PM this afternoon until 11 PM Sunday.
The Mojave Desert has a Wind Advisory in effect from 5 PM this afternoon until 11 PM Sunday.

The trough is causing relative humidities to fall throughout the San Joaquin Valley and West Side Hills of the Coastal Range to fall below 20 percent Saturday and Sunday. Then below 15 percent for much of next week as a high pressure ridge begins to build in. That, combined with winds that can gust to 35 MPH on Saturday and Sunday has caused a Red Flag Warning to be issued from 5 AM Saturday until 8 PM Monday. The Mojave Desert and the Desert Slopes are also under a Red Flag Warning Saturday 5 AM until Sunday at 11 PM, as their Relative Humidities will range between 10 and 20 percent. Both areas under the Red Flag Warning have dried grass that can and will catch and spread into fast moving grass fires. Avoid dragging chains, parking on dried grass, using a lawn mower to cut the grass to help mitigate potential fires. If these do happen, know your evacuation routes and have an emergency to-go kit ready. It only takes one spark.

Finally, looking ahead to next week, temperatures will be above normal once more. As that happens, practice water safety as water ways will be running cold throughout the day time.
Practicing water safety when out on the lake, in a stream or river will help to keep everyone safe.

Strong winds with gusts up to 25 MPH will develop this afternoon at KMCE, KVIS, KFAT and KBFL.
