DISCUSSION

Temperatures and HeatRisk peak today as afternoon highs look to peak around 5 degrees above average with most of the desert valleys ranging from the upper 90s to around 105 degrees. Areas to the south of Lake Havasu will exceed 110 and around Death Valley looks to climb above 115 degrees. As such, an Extreme Heat Warning is in affect until tonight for Death Valley, the Las Vegas Valley, Pahrump Valley, Moapa Valley, Colorado River Valley, southern Mohave County, and southeastern San Bernardino County. The overnight hours will offer some relief, but lows will still range 5 to 10 degrees above average. The upper level pattern begins to push a trough into the area from the Northwest, pushing the high pressure east, and allowing for a cooling trend starting Friday.

Weak convection has moved through southern portions of the CWA earlier in the day with spotty shower activity moving through Sierra Nevada near Bishop this after. So far, these showers have been on the weaker side with some brief lightning activity, but don't look to be impactful.

The late week pattern change will increase the pressure gradient from the high pressure to the east to the building trough to the northwest and result in increasing winds. Friday afternoon will offer breezy to gusty winds that look to ease slightly overnight.
Winds look to become even stronger for Saturday with widespread gusts above 30 mph possible and above 40 mph possible in higher terrain and favored gaps and passes. This coupled with very dry conditions has increase fire weather concerns, with a Fire Weather Watch in effect for Nye, Esmeralda, and portions of Lincoln and Clark counties for Saturday. Winds look to reduce for Sunday but remain breezy. Longer term models are starting to favor breezy winds peaking around 25 mph each afternoon into the first half of next week.

Southwest winds with intermittent gusts around 15 knots are expected into early this evening before settling around 8-10 knots overnight. Mid and high level clouds expected overnight, but are expected to diminish on Friday. Temperatures will drop below 100F after 04z. Isolated thunderstorms along the Daggett corridor will end after 05z.

Winds will remain around 10 knots or less for most areas with the exception of KDAG, where westerly winds gusting to around 20-25 knots will prevail overnight.
A few isolated showers and thunderstorms over the eastern Sierra along with portions of San Bernardino County will gradually dissipate this evening with a few mid and high level clouds overnight. These showers and storms are not expected to impact the KBIH and KDAG terminals.

FIRE WEATHER
A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 11AM Saturday through midnight that night for Nye, Esmeralda, and portions of Lincoln and Clark counties. Concerns include RH ranging from 5 to 15% while winds begin to build above 25 mph and gusts approaching 40 mph. Winds will last deeper into that night, but humidities will begin to have some recovery by the late that night.
