SYNOPSIS
High pressure will build over the area today, keeping conditions dry and increasingly mild, before shifting east Thursday as a rather weak storm system grazes northern Utah. A second, less weak system will follow on Saturday.
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Friday)...Utah and southwest Wyoming are under a west to northwest flow this morning between yesterday's weak grazing system and high pressure centered over California. The ridge will continue east today, with the axis moving overhead early this evening. The presence of this ridge will bring a steady warming trend into Thursday, with maxes averaging 10F above seasonal normals by Thursday afternoon.
The eastern movement of the ridge will also continue Thursday in response to another weak wave moving onshore. Models are trending even weaker with this system, generating little if any precipitation over far northern Utah in association with it. The main impact of the wave will be to curb the warming trend ever so slightly as it brings a mostly dry front into the area late Thursday into early Friday.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Friday)...The long term period is relatively quiet with high pressure dominating for most of the period. The one exception is a quickly moving trough on Saturday that will bring some precipitation, although QPF totals have a pretty low ceiling amongst ensemble members with the highest members only being able to squeeze out up to 0.25" for valley locations. The median is quite a bit lower with only a few hundredths of an inch.
Southerly winds will increase, particularly across southern Utah, ahead of this trough. These strong winds will pair with low relative humidity in the single digits to lower teens. The most noticeable change from the trough will be about a 10 degree drop in temperatures back closer to normal for this time of year. A more amplified ridge builds in behind this departing trough. This will help temperatures rapidly warm throughout the week with highs 15-20 degrees above normal and mostly dry conditions persisting.
AVIATION
KSLC...VFR conditions will persist for the KSLC terminal through the period. Mostly clear skies and dry conditions will continue as light northerly winds persist throughout the day.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING
VFR conditions will persist across the airspace as high pressure builds into the area. Mostly clear skies and dry conditions will continue as winds remain light and diurnally driven.
FIRE WEATHER
High pressure will build over Utah today, bringing dry and stable conditions with generally light winds and mild temperatures. The ridge will shift east Thursday as a very weak system grazes northern Utah, bringing a rather small chance of precipitation to far northern Utah. A second, less weak system will follow for Saturday, bringing temperatures back to near seasonal normals with a higher chance of northern Utah showers.
