SYNOPSIS
Issued at 1233 PM PST Thu Dec 7 2023
Rain comes to an end by late in the day. Cold overnight temperatures are expected for the next couple of nights, especially across the interior. Warming trend expected early next week.
SHORT TERM
(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 1233 PM PST Thu Dec 7 2023
Light to moderate rain is moving across the North Bay as of this writing, will sweep through the Bay Area between 12 PM - 2 PM, and then arrive along the Central Coast early/mid afternoon. Rainfall amounts will be light with the North Bay coastal ranges seeing the highest totals, up to 0.25". Around 0.10" is expected in the North Bay Valleys and across the City, then amounts tapper downward as one heads south.
A colder air mass will then settle into the region overnight. Lows are expected to cool into the lower 30s in the wind-sheltered interior. Elsewhere, expecting temperatures to lower into the mid 30s to lower 40s. A Frost Advisory has been issued for the North Bay Valleys, Southern Salinas Valley, southern portions of Monterey/San Benito counties for tonight.
Tomorrow, high temperatures will struggle to warm above the upper 50s (lower 40s in the peaks).
LONG TERM
(Friday night through next Wednesday)
Issued at 1233 PM PST Thu Dec 7 2023
Saturday morning will be the coldest with interior areas dropping into the mid 20s to lower 30s. For this, we have a Freeze Watch in effect for the aforementioned zones. A gradual warming trend will resume heading into next week.
AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 648 PM PST Thu Dec 7 2023
A cold front located across the north Central Coast over to Santa Clara County continues moving southeastward. Showers along the cold front and a few lingering showers in the wake of the cold front are forecast to diminish across our forecast area tonight.
Conditions are currently MVFR-VFR except IFR recently at KCVH and IFR currently at KSNS.
Patchy fog, possibly dense fog, /LIFR-IFR/ may develop tonight and Friday morning due to moistened boundary layer air, light winds, clearing, long December night-time radiative cooling to space. Recent statistical guidance e.g. for KSTS is weighted toward fog tonight. The 00z Oakland upper air sounding showed the highest distribution of water vapor at and below 8500 feet and it was drier above 8500 feet. The synoptic pattern transitions from mid to upper level troughing this evening to ridging, including lower to mid level thermal ridging Friday. Surface high pressure builds over far northern California to the Great Basin resulting in offshore winds Friday through Friday night.
Vicinity of SFO...VFR, west wind 5 to 10 knots this evening.
Statistical guidance wind forecasts may be a bit overdone, if the surface winds do diminish to light overnight then fog /LIFR/IFR/ is more likely to develop late tonight and Friday morning; not indicated in current 00z TAF, though will monitor satellite and surface observations and amend if needed. Otherwise mixing winds resulting in VFR for KSFO Friday, best chances VFR late morning and afternoon.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO
Monterey Bay Terminals...It's MVFR-VFR except KSNS reports IFR ceilings in recent 5 minute observations. Occasional showers are accompanying the cold front as it continues to move southeastward across the north Central Coast. Boundary layer air moistened from rain may result in additional patchy low clouds and fog /LIFR-IFR/ overnight and Friday morning; will monitor satellite and surface observations and amend if needed. Mixing winds Friday resulting in VFR.
MARINE
(Tonight through next Tuesday)
