KEY MESSAGES

* A cold front will move through the region today, bringing gusty northwesterly winds and cooler temperatures to the region as well as isolated showers and thunderstorms for the eastern half of our forecast area.

* A disturbance will bring another round of gusty north winds to the region on Thursday and Friday.

DISCUSSION
through the weekend.

Overnight satellite imagery shows a low pressure system churning over the Great Basin with isolated convection across the southeastern Great Basin and northwestern Arizona. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue across the eastern half of our forecast area today, driven by the cold front associated with the aforementioned low. Light-to-moderate rain, lightning, graupel, and erratic winds will be possible with storms today. In addition to showers and thunderstorms, this cold front will also bring cooler than normal temperatures to the region with the first freezes of the season expected in the southwestern Great Basin early this morning.
The northern Owens Valley will have their shot at their first freeze of the season early tomorrow morning, as lighter winds and clear skies allow for stronger radiational cooling overnight. Gusty northwesterly winds will also accompany this front. The Inyo, Esmeralda, and central Nye counties will see peak wind gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range with isolated wind gusts in excess of 40 mph possible in areas of higher terrain. Elsewhere, gusts will peak in the 25 to 35 mph behind the cold front.

On Wednesday, the aforementioned low pressure system will move off to our east, with breezy north winds lingering down the Colorado River Valley and temperatures across the region beginning to gradually warm back up. A disturbance will sneak in behind the exiting low on Thursday, bringing another round of gusty north winds to the region Thursday afternoon through Friday. The strongest of these winds are expected in the lower Colorado River Valley, where the NBM boasts an 80+ percent chance of peak wind gusts in excess of 40 mph later this week. Winds will relax on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures returning to near normal over the weekend.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California
For the 18Z Forecast Package
A cold front continues to push south this morning and is currently pushing into the central Mojave Desert and Colorado River Valley. Behind the front, expect gusty north-northwest winds generally 20-35 knots. Precipitation chances (30-60%) should remain confined to southeastern NV and northwestern AZ. Near the shower activity, SCT-BKN conditions between 6-10kft. Farther south and west, anticipate FEW-SCT conditions at the same altitude.
