New AVIATION, BEACHES

SYNOPSIS
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

A short-lived warming trend will begin today and continue into Tuesday. An approaching trough of low pressure will bring the return to unsettled weather Tuesday night into Wednesday that will last into late week.

SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Dense fog has developed over the North Bay Valleys this morning. As such, have issued a Dense Fog Advisory through 10 AM for the northern San Francisco Bay and North Bay zones.

Otherwise, warmer conditions are anticipated this afternoon as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the southwest. As such, drier conditions are also expected. Look for temperatures to warm into the upper 60s across the interior to upper 50s near the immediate coast.

Tonight, temperatures will generally range from the mid 40s to lower 50s in the hills. Dry conditions are also likely to prevail.

LONG TERM
(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Temperatures will warm into the lower 70s on Tuesday, some 5-10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Tuesday night into Wednesday a frontal boundary will sweep through the region. Conditions on cool on Wednesday for the North Bay and San Fransico Bay Area while the Central Coast will hold on the one more warm day across the interior. Unsettled conditions persist into Friday. Rainfall amounts from Tuesday night through Friday: 0.25- 0.75" in the North Bay, 0.05-0.25" elsewhere, to barely a trace interior Monterey/San Benito and Santa Clara Valley.

Gradual clearing occurs by Friday night as a colder airmass filers into the region. This combined with clearing skies will lead to some chilly/cold overnight temperatures. Highest confidence (40-60%)for freezing temperatures will be over the interior North Bay and interior areas of Monterey/San Benito counties. The need for frost/freeze products will be monitored.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 325 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

VLIFR conditions currently prevail across the North Bay terminals with dense fog resulting in visbys at a quarter mile or less.
Visbys are expected to improve to LIFR-IFR conditions after 17z before VFR after 19z. Further south across SF Bay Area terminals, VFR currently prevails but fog is lurking nearby. High clouds on satellite unfortunately making it difficult to see the fog deck, but based on webcams, observations, and hi-res guidance, current thinking is that the best chance for fog and subsequent visbys <=4 miles for SFO/OAK/SJC after 14z-15z this morning. Between now and 15z, confidence on sub-VFR conditions is lower. By 19z, low clouds/fog are expected to dissipate and VFR with NW/N winds expected across the region. Fog and low cigs expected again tonight and early Tuesday morning with favorable meteorological conditions (saturated boundary layer, light winds, building high pressure). Model guidance is hinting at patchy dense fog development early Tues morning as well.

Vicinity of SFO...Currently VFR but tempo is included for low cig development through 15z. Higher confidence for fog/low clouds to move over the SFO/OAK terminals exists after 15z this morning. Low confidence though for just how low visbys will get after 15z, but at least visbys dipping to MVFR levels are expected with the potential for lower down to 1 statute mile from 15z-18z intermittently. VFR expected after 19z with onshore flow resuming this afternoon. IFR and LIFR conditions expected early Tuesday morning towards the end of the TAF period. Lower confidence for LIFR conditions so not included in the taf for now.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO. If low clouds and fog do develop, reduced visbys may linger over the San Mateo bridge longer, lasting potentially through 20-21z.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR expected through the TAF period.
Currently BKN-OVC clouds at 4000 feet. Weak SE winds will shift NW this afternoon becoming breezy.

MARINE
(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Light winds currently across the coastal waters, but northerly winds will become breezy again this afternoon near Point Sur while gentle southerly winds persist across the northern waters. Patchy dense fog development possible over the San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, and the Delta early this morning. Elevated seas will persist for much of the week as a series of large, long period northwest swells propagate through the waters, resulting in hazardous conditions for small craft operators. Widespread rain chances return midweek.

BEACHES
Issued at 325 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

A long period northwest swell will build into the coastal waters this afternoon, resulting in large, unexpected waves that can sweep across the beach without warning through Tuesday. Sneaker waves can sweep people and pets into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches as well as move large objects such as logs, crushing anyone caught underneath. Northwest-facing beaches are most at risk for sneaker waves today into tomorrow. Additional long- period swells are expected to move through the waters through midweek, resulting in potentially another round of sneaker waver risks. As these swells build into midweek, large wave heights are forecasted which may result in the issuance of a High Surf Advisory. Be sure to stay updated with the forecast for any beach hazard updates this week.
