KEY MESSAGES
1. Chances for dense fog return to the San Joaquin Valley tonight into Friday morning and again Friday night into Saturday morning.
2. There is medium confidence for another system to approach central California Sunday through early next week bringing additional rain and snow to the region.
3. Medium confidence exists for an active storm pattern to continue through much of next week.
DISCUSSION
There is a slight chance for showers to redevelop over the Sierra Nevada for this afternoon; otherwise, mainly calm conditions will prevail today until Saturday. However, the likelihood for valley fog will increase tonight into Friday morning. A 45 to 55 percent chance for visibility below 1/4 mile is shown for portions of the San Joaquin Valley, including eastern portions of the Valley such as the Highway 99 corridor, for early Friday morning (mainly 4 AM to 8 AM). Similar probabilities regarding dense valley fog are shown for the following morning, with the best chances for the same time period on Saturday.
The break from the active storm pattern ends by Sunday morning, as chances for precipitation return to the region. The best chances will be from Sunday night into Tuesday with this next system. This next system will be colder compared to previous ones we have observed this cooler season so far. Confidence remains moderate that we will see snow on the passes in Kern County, including the Grapevine and Tehachapi, as well as the Sierra Nevada foothills during early next week. Snow levels drop to around 3,500 feet by Monday night in the Sierra foothills and by Tuesday in Kern County. Another round of precipitation arrives late Tuesday with chances of precipitation lasting until next Thursday due to the upper-level trough persisting over much of the West Coast.
In their latest outlooks, CPC shows continued below average temperatures at both the 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks, as well as above average precipitation. Although, the probabilities are considerably lower on the 8-14 day outlook.
AVIATION
MVFR to VFR conditions are expected to prevail for the San Joaquin Valley until 08Z Friday. Mountain obscuring clouds are expected for the next 24 hours, along with a 50-70 percent chance of IFR conditions across the San Joaquin Valley after 08Z Friday and a 40-60 percent chance for LIFR conditions due to fog from 10Z to 17Z Friday. VFR conditions will prevail over the Mojave Desert.
