Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 319 AM PDT Sat Jun 12 2021

SYNOPSIS. Warming trend through the weekend, then turning hot by mid-week. A weak system may bring a few light showers to the Coast Range late this weekend.

DISCUSSION. Upper level low off the British Columbia coast will provide continued onshore flow to the region over the next few days. This will result in periods of breezy winds through early next week, especially Sunday and Monday. Local gusts generally in the 20 to 30 mph range are expected. Temperatures are forecast to warm to near or slightly above climatological normals this weekend into early next week. Forecast highs in the Valley will be in the upper 80s to low 90s, with 60s to mid 80s in the mountains. Some light showers are still forecast over the Coastal Range Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning.

Ensembles and clusters favor triple digit heat by the middle of next week given the westward expansion of a strong upper ridge centered over the Four Corners. More on that in the extended forecast.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday).

GEFS and EC ensemble remain in pretty good agreement with strong upper ridging over NorCal during the second half of next week resulting in a period of hot weather, especially Wednesday through Friday. There's still some disagreement in how hot it'll be during this period with the the EC (a little stronger with the ridge) running about 5 degrees warmer with forecast highs compared to the NBM, particularly on Thursday and Friday. In any case, likelihood of most valley and foothill locales seeing highs from 100-110 Thursday and Friday with overnight lows only in the upper 60s to upper 70s resulting in widespread high heat risk. Fortunately, for now it appears any elevated moisture drawn northward by the heat will remain to the east with any thunderstorm threat generally remaining well to the south and east of Lake Tahoe.

AVIATION. VFR conditions the next 24 hours except SCT-BKN070 occasionally obscuring higher terrain Coast Range and extreme southern Cascade Range. Southwesterly surface wind gusts increasing to 20-25 kts Delta after 20Z, local southerly gusts 15-20 kts in the Sacramento Valley after 22Z, and local northwesterly gusts 15-20 kts across the northern San Joaquin Valley after 22Z. Wind gusts decreasing after 06Z Sunday.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
