Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 312 PM PDT Wed Aug 4 2021

SYNOPSIS. Periods of critical fire weather conditions this afternoon through Thursday evening. Mainly dry weather and near normal temperatures expected through the week. Breezy onshore winds at times through the weekend.

DISCUSSION. GOES-West clearly depicts several hotspots associated with the Dixie, McFarland and House fires this afternoon. Winds are currently gusting up to 15-30 mph in the northern Sacramento Valley and adjacent terrain, with very low relative humidity values down to the single digits and teens.

Ensembles still on track depicting a trough moving through interior NorCal late tonight into Thursday. This will continue to bring periods of critical fire weather conditions over the northern and central Sacramento Valley, the northern Sierra Nevada, mountains of Shasta and western Plumas counties, and the northeast foothills. Wind gusts could locally range between 20-35 mph as pressure gradient tightens. Humidity values slightly increase some on Thursday, but winds will remain breezy in the afternoon and early evening hours. South to southwest winds will shift to the west northwest late day Thursday.

The combination of very low humidity, gusty winds and extremely dry fuels will bring periods of critical fire weather conditions to the aforementioned areas. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for the northern and central Sacramento Valley and Coastal Range through early this evening and for the mountains of Shasta and western Plumas counties, the northeast foothills and the northern Sierra Nevada through Thursday evening. Please practice fire safety.

Daytime temperatures will drop to slightly below normal levels on Thursday given strengthening onshore flow and the trough passage, with high temperatures remaining in the mid 80s to low 90s. Another warm up is in store late in the period, with Valley highs climbing into the upper 90s to around 100.

HREF still suggests the potential for a few isolated thunderstorms to develop over portions of far northern Shasta County mountains Thursday afternoon. Dry weather with lighter winds is anticipated Friday and Saturday, as upper low quickly moves northeast into the Northern Plains.

Northerly winds could filter in wildfire smoke into the Central Valley by Friday morning. Be sure to check local air quality reports and protect yourself from wildfire smoke.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Sunday THROUGH Wednesday). Ensembles and clusters keep troughing of some degree north of the forecast area. This pattern will continue dry conditions through the forecast period with high temperatures near to slightly below normal.
