AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 1214 AM EST Fri Mar 5 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure slowly builds into the area through this weekend with dry weather continuing into next week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/. As of 615 PM EST Thursday .

Latest surface analysis shows the cold front that crossed the area earlier today continues to push well south of the area, and high pressure centered over Lake Superior is building into the area. A secondary CAA surge is expected late tonight and through the overnight. Gusty winds late tonight along the coast and over the Eastern Shore (15-25 mph gusts). Any remaining high cumulus clouds will dissipate early this evening with mostly clear skies expected overnight. Dew points will continue to fall overnight from the 20s down into the teens by early Friday morning as drier air continues to filter in from the N/NW. Low temps tonight will fall into the mid 20s N, upper 20s central, and low 30s in SE VA/NE NC.

SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/. As of 335 PM EST Thursday .

Mostly sunny, cooler, and dry Friday with highs in low 40s over the Eastern Shore, mid to upper 40s along the coast in eastern Va, and upper 40s to around 50F for the rest of the FA. Dewpoints will drop into the single digits in the afternoon with minimum RH values in the low to mid 20s over the Eastern Shore and along the coast and in the teens inland. Gusty NW winds in the afternoon with sustained winds 10 to 15 mph and gusts to 15-20 mph inland and 20-30 mph gusts along the coast and over the Eastern Shore. Fortunately, the ground and fire fuels remain moist, otherwise, this would be an increased fire danger day. Winds subside Fri night as high pressure continues to build to the west. Lows Fri night in the mid 20s N and upper 20s to around 30F S.

Dry weather will continue Sat and Sun with highs ranging from the low 50s SW to upper 40s NE (low to mid 40s over the Eastern Shore) Sat and from the upper 40s to around 50F SW to the low to mid 40s NE Sun. Lows Sat night in the mid to upper 20s. Gusty WNW winds 15-20 mph inland and along the coast and 20-25 mph over the Eastern Shore will once again return Sat afternoon.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/. As of 330 PM EST Thursday .

Mainly dry weather will continue from Saturday night through Wednesday night. The surface high continues to build toward the area before becoming centered just to our west Monday AM. Lows Sat/Sun nights will be in the mid/upper 20s in most areas, with highs Monday in the upper 40s to mid 50F.

A warming trend begins early next week as ridging aloft builds over the ern CONUS and the surface high becomes centered off the Carolina coast. This will result in SSW-SW low level flow across the FA. High temperatures will warm each day from the 50s on Monday to near 70 by Thursday. Low temperatures will warm each morning from the low 30s Tuesday morning to low 50s by Thursday morning. A cold front may try and approach the area from the north by Thursday. Although, almost all guidance keeps the rain showers and front to our north.

AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. As of 1215 AM EST Friday .

VFR conditions through the 06z TAF period. Winds are N-NW at 10-15 kts at the terminals, with gusts to 25 kts near the coast as a secondary CAA surge is moving through the area. Winds turn to the NW this morning and will remain that way through the remainder of the TAF period. Gusts of 20-25 kts are expected at all of the terminals during the day today. SKC through the period, with SCT-BKN CI possible across srn VA and NE NC by late tonight (mainly after 06z Sat).

OUTLOOK . A prolonged period of generally benign weather is expected to continue into early next week as high pressure builds back over the area.

MARINE. As of 330 PM EST Thursday .

WNW winds 10-15 kt north and light onshore for central/southern waters will continue into the evening behind a cold front that has moved well south of the local area. A stronger period of CAA is expected this by this evening through Fri morning with NNW winds increasing to 15-25 kt with gusts of up to 30 kt. Waves heights reach 4-5 ft with 3-4 ft waves in the Bay. Winds/waves/seas diminish/subside Friday afternoon. SCAs will remain in place for the rivers until 10 am, most of the Bay and Currituck Sound until 1 pm and on the coastal waters until 4 pm.

Generally benign marine conditions then favored later Fri and over the upcoming weekend. Sfc high pressure rebuilds over the mid- Atlantic region . eventually pushing offshore late in the weekend into early next week while another weak area of sfc low pressure moves E-NE across the Gulf coast to the southeast coast. Looking to remain sub-SCA through this time frame . w/ with winds out of the N- NW Sun-Mon.

AKQ WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. MD . None. NC . None. VA . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 10 AM EST this morning for ANZ635>638. Small Craft Advisory until 1 PM EST this afternoon for ANZ631>634. Small Craft Advisory until 4 PM EST this afternoon for ANZ630- 650-652-654-656-658.
