SYNOPSIS
A weak grazing storm system will bring breezy winds today and slightly less warm temperatures for Friday. A second system will bring some showers to northern Utah on Saturday before high pressure allows the warming trend to return for early next week.
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Saturday)...High pressure is centered near the Utah/Colorado border this morning as a weak Pacific Northwest trough moves onshore. In between these two features, seeing some clouds over northeast Utah, but otherwise clear skies.
Warm air continues to advect in with the southwest flow, so highs will be noticeably warmer than yesterday, averaging 10F above seasonal normals.
The weak trough is on track to graze northern Utah during the day today. The main impact will be on winds, which will be breezy at times this afternoon and could result in some heightened fire weather concerns. Otherwise, the system will bring a weak and mostly dry front through, dropping northern Utah maxes just a few degrees for Friday with high pressure briefly moving back in.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Saturday)...A weakening trough will be moving through the area to start the long term period. Southerly winds ahead of the trough will still be gusting across the southeast portion of the area with low relative humidity.
Scattered showers and afternoon convection will be possible across the northern 2/3rds of the CWA on Saturday. Instability will be lacking which will help to limit the strength of storms that do develop. However, drier lower levels across central Utah with inverted V sounding profiles could create a low end risk for some microburst winds. More showers and convection is possible on Sunday across the northeast portion of the area as this trough splits and potentially develops a weak cutoff low across the four corners.
Temperatures begin to warm upwards of 10-15 degrees above normal by early next week as a more amplified ridge builds across the Intermountain West. One wrinkle in the forecast that will keep small PoPs across the area will be that some moisture sticks around as the airmass doesn't completely dry out. This moisture could tap into some enhanced lift from a closed low that tries to develop across the Great Basin and slowly lingers through early next week.
AVIATION
KSLC...VFR conditions will persist across the KSLC terminal through the period. Dry and stable conditions will continue with light southerly winds transitioning to a light northerly lake breeze in the afternoon.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING
VFR conditions will persist across the airspace. Dry and stable conditions will continue with southerly winds increasing during the day across the southern two thirds of the area. Areas further north will keep lighter and more diurnally driven winds throughout the day.
FIRE WEATHER
Winds will increase today as a rather weak storm system grazes northern Utah today. Associated showers should stay north of the area, but temperatures Friday should be a few degrees less warm than today. A less weak system will follow for Saturday, bringing another increase in winds and some showers for northern Utah. High pressure will return to start the upcoming week, resulting in light winds and a return of the warming trend.
