Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 442 PM PDT Sat Apr 10 2021
SYNOPSIS. A slight warming trend is forecast this weekend. Skies will remain mostly clear except areas of night and morning low clouds. Locally gusty onshore winds continue today, mainly near the coast, with lighter winds expected by Sunday. No rainfall is forecast through next week. Breezy again on Monday and Tuesday nights.
DISCUSSION. as of 01:52 PM PDT Saturday . Ample sunshine over the Golden State this afternoon. Just see some high clouds streaming across SoCal, otherwise, fairly clear over the SF Bay Area and Central CA. As such, current temperatures are running a couple to several degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. As of 1 pm, there were low 60s along the coast and mid 60s to mid 70s inland. Daytime highs today will overall stay in the 60s and 70s and should be a bit warmer than yesterday.
Bottom line for the forecast this week: Daytime highs will only vary by about 5 degrees for the rest of this week while most overnight lows stay in the 40s this week (a few spots could cool into the upper 30s). Overall, these temperatures should hover near normal. Breezy on Monday and Tuesday night. Dry conditions persist.
Our region continues to be influenced by ridging and a warm airmass aloft. The synoptic pattern changes Monday night into Wednesday as an upper level low over the Pac NW nudges into NorCal. That's when we'll see a slight cooling trend across our region and it will get breezy in the hills. Extended models continue to show very little chance of any precipitation for our region.
AVIATION. As of 04:42 AM PDT Saturday . For the 00Z TAFs. VFR at present with moderate onshore winds. With strong winds out over the ocean, LLWS was left in the TAF at KSTS as winds aloft near the terminal is expected to remain strong through early Saturday evening. Winds will diminish through the night. Low-to-mid level clouds are expected once again overnight. Most terminals are expected to be MVFR, but North Bay terminals have a better chance for some patchy fog to return. With a stronger gradient, better chances for cloud cover over East Bay terminals and the Monterey Bay, with clearing after 16Z. High clouds remain on Sunday with breezy onshore winds Sunday afternoon.
Vicinity of KSFO . Winds are up to 20 kts and slowly diminishing. VFR conditions currently. A FEW clouds could pass over the terminals as better chances for cloud cover is across the Bay at KOAK, but currently VFR is expected through the night. High clouds linger tomorrow, but VFR while the afternoon seabreeze sets up.
SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals . Currently VFR with breezy onshore winds. As winds weaken overnight, stratus is forecast to push in once again for VFR through the night, clearing by 17Z on Sunday. VFR Sunday with breezy northwest winds.
MARINE. as of 02:42 PM PDT Saturday . Winds out of the northwest prevail and provide strong wind gusts across the waters this afternoon, with gale force winds forecast across the northern and central waters as well as along the coast south of Point Sur. These gusty winds will generate steep to very steep wind waves at 8 to 10 seconds. The next moderate northwest swell arrives late this weekend and merge with the steep wind waves. Together, steep to very steep combined seas of 12 to 18 feet at 10 to 12 seconds are possible Sunday and Monday. Novice mariners and sailors should monitor forecasts closely or consider staying in harbor over the coming days as gale force winds and steep seas continue.
