Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Winds remain light to breezy over much of the waters, with increasing northwest winds over the northern outer waters as the next system moves southward over the northeast pacific. As the swell remains mixed between the light northwest and southerly swells, winds will increase on Friday over the northern outer waters generating steep, fresh swell making for hazardous conditions for smaller vessels into the weekend. As the system approaches the coast Friday afternoon into Friday evening, there is a slight chance for some light precipitation over coastal waters. An isolated storm may be possible, but confidence was too low to add it to the official forecast.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 431 AM PDT Thu May 13 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cooling trend will continue through the remainder of the week, with increasing night and morning low clouds and patchy fog. Near to slightly below normal daytime temperatures will then persist into the upcoming weekend, along with mainly dry weather conditions. However, some drizzle will be possible along the coast late Friday night and Saturday morning.

DISCUSSION. as of 3:34 AM PDT Thursday . Solid push of marine stratus overnight per satellite fog product. Fort Ord profiler doesn't show a drastic increase in the marine layer depth, but satellite reveals clouds cover much of the inland valleys. In addition to the low clouds some patchy fog and mist is also being reported. Expect the low clouds to hang through early this morning with a gradual clearing back to the coast.

No major updates to the forecast in the near term. Despite some afternoon sunshine temperatures this afternoon will be cooler with upper 50s to 60s coast and 70s/80s inland. The marine layer will surge inland again tonight and linger through Friday morning with patchy fog/drizzle. A few more degrees of cooling are expected on Friday, but very minor in the big picture.

A pattern change heading into the weekend as an upper level low develops and moves over the Bay Area. The developing low will help to really deepen the marine layer by Saturday morning. Models have been showing drizzle so that remains in the forecast. Would not be surprised one bit to see a few hundredths accumulate along the coast or coastal mountains early Saturday. As for more widespread or better chances of precip, it's looking less likely. Earlier model runs had suggested some scattered showers or possibly some thunderstorms Friday night and over the weekend. The 00Z model runs, both deterministic and ensembles, have shifted the upper low slightly westward and take the upper moisture/instability farther west too. Given that upper lows are tricky and model run consistency is lacking will keep the forecast dry for now. There still is a chance for thunder over the Sierra and the mountain ranges to the north of the Bay Area, low confidence for the Bay Area. Regardless of precip, the passing low will keep night/morning clouds in place with cool temperatures.

Quiet and dry weather for early next week as well.

AVIATION. As of 04:31 AM PDT Thursday . For the 12Z TAFs. Widespread stratus reaching all the terminals Thursday morning. A few terminals in the west SF Bay shoreline and South Bay are MVFR, while the rest vary between IFR and LIFR. Models are increasingly leaning towards later clearing, so the TAFs were updated pushing it out to between 18Z to 19Z, with some coastal terminals holding on to 20Z. Winds are light, but after the clouds clear, winds will increase and be breezy Thursday afternoon. VFR conditions will be brief as models are indicating for an earlier return of cigs Thursday night with winds subsiding late. As a low pressure system inches closer to the coast, it should influence the marine layer to deepen, so slightly higher cigs are put in the TAFs for Thursday night for IFR/MVFR conditions, with isolated LIFR possible.

Vicinity of KSFO . MVFR conditions expected through early Thursday morning. There is a chance for IFR conditions, so a TEMPO group was added, but there is low confidence in cigs falling. Clouds will linger around the terminal with longer time needed for clearing. Currently projecting VFR after 19Z. Winds will increase with winds up to 20 kts Thursday afternoon. Winds will remain breezy through the evening as MVFR cigs returning with levels falling toward IFR levels overnight.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . LIFR for low cigs and reduced vis. Reduced conditions will linger longer until 18Z with coastal terminals holding on until after 20Z. VFR briefly with breezy onshore winds Thursday afternoon. While the marine layer is forecast to deepen slightly, IFR conditions are still expected Thursday night and expected to return after 00Z, which increasing chances for the return to IFR overnight.

MARINE. as of 02:43 AM PDT Thursday .
