KEY MESSAGES
* Warm and dry weather prevails through midweek with streamflows running fast and very cold this week.
* Gusty winds return Thursday and Friday, resulting in travel, recreation, and fire weather impacts.
* The holiday weekend continues to lean towards a warm and dry scenario, although showers or a stray storm cannot be ruled out.
DISCUSSION
Today will be the warmest day of the week so far, with highs in the mid 80s and mid 60s-70s for valley locations and high elevations, respectively. Over the next couple of days, afternoon highs drop back down to near normal, due to two shortwave troughs.
The first shortwave will skirt by the OR border Thursday with a second shortwave dropping into North-Central CA Friday.
These two mini systems will bring gusty winds Thursday and Friday, in addition to slight chances for showers and a stray thunderstorm or two. Thursday looks to be the windiest day across the area, with gusts of 35-45 mph in W NV Basin and Range and up to 55 mph along the Sierra crest. As of now, there is a 50-70% chance for gusts to exceed 40 mph in wind prone locations. This includes the US-395 corridor and US-95 near Walker Lake. Friday, on the other hand, will provide the best chances for showers.
However, these will be isolated along the OR border Friday afternoon, where there is a 10-15% chance for lightning.
Wind gusts Thursday and Friday will be capable of bringing hazardous boating conditions on area lakes, including Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake and other western NV lakes, as well as possible travel difficulties for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust will also be possible out in the NV Basin and Range.
By Saturday, ridging sets up to our north and only amplifies through the following days. This will bring afternoon temperatures right back up ahead of the holiday weekend. As of now, there is an 85% chance that Reno will exceed 85 degrees on Sunday. With those warm, leaning on hot, temperatures, rivers and streams will look enticing. However, with continued high level Sierra snowmelt, rivers will be running fast and cold; even limited water exposure can pose the risk of hypothermia. It's encouraged to refrain from a quick dip.

AVIATION
Widespread VFR conditions with light afternoon breezes prevail for all terminals through much of today. The one exception is KTRK, where there may be patchy VCFG this morning until 21/14Z. Gusty winds return Thursday, increasing the potential for LLWS and mountain wave turbulence.
-Giralte/Salas
FIRE WEATHER
A multi-hour period of elevated to critical fire weather conditions is likely on Thursday and Friday afternoon across much of western Nevada. These conditions are due to the overlap of west to southwest gusts of 30-40 mph with afternoon RH's of 7-15%. Very warm and dry weather continues into the weekend, but winds are expected to be lighter.
While a lack of prominent fuel intel will preclude the issuance of any products at the moment, a report from the Great Basin GACC did reveal that we remain in green-up with curing cheatgrass.
