Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Locally gusty winds will continue into Sunday morning along the big sur coast south of point sur. Lighter winds and seas elsewhere through early Monday. High pressure builds over the desert southwest early next week as a broad upper low spins in the gulf of alaska. This will result in increasing surface pressure gradients that will allow northwest winds to increase across the coastal waters. Seas will also build mid to late week as strong northerly winds develop off cape mendocino.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 246 AM PDT Sun Jun 13 2021

SYNOPSIS. Near average temperatures through early this week. Hot conditions with moderate to very high heat risk develop mid to late week. A weak system may bring a few light showers to the Coast Range this afternoon.

DISCUSSION. Increasing onshore gradients expected today as troughing approaches the coast. Local gusts generally in the 20 to 30 mph range are expected today, especially through the Delta and portions of the Central Valley. Onshore flow will also lead to near average temperatures through early this week. Forecast highs in the Valley will be in the upper 80s to low 90s, with 60s to mid 80s in the mountains this afternoon into early this week. Strong onshore flow will raise the possibility of a marine stratus intrusion into the Valley by Monday morning.

A weak frontal boundary could bring some light showers to the Coastal Range this afternoon into early Monday morning. Thunderstorm threat will remain north of the forecast area.

Ensembles and clusters favor triple digit heat by mid-week given the westward expansion of a strong ridge centered over the Four Corners. 850 mb temperatures in the mid 20s deg C could support highs in the 100-104 degree range across the Valley on Wednesday. Little no overnight relief is expected as lows will range from the upper 60s to around 80; warmest readings in the northern Sacramento Valley and the thermal belts. Widespread moderate to high heat risk will increase the risk for heat-related illnesses on Wednesday. Practice heat safety by staying hydrated, finding air conditioning, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and learning the symptoms of excessive heat exposure. Stay tuned for more details as the forecast evolves.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday).

Ensembles are in good agreement with a big warm up for the extended forecast as a strong upper level ridge builds over the area. Triple digit heat is expected to continue into next weekend with the hottest temperatures still looking likely on Thursday and Friday when highs of 105-110 are looking likely across the Central Valley with daily records potentially in jeopardy. Overnight lows are also going to remain warm and some of the thermal belts may only cool into the lower 80s. This will bring widespread high to very high heat risk to the region. The ridge may weaken a bit beginning Saturday allowing a modest cool down to begin for areas influenced by the Delta Breeze, with a little more cooling spreading further inland next Sunday. Thunderstorm threat likely to remain to the east.

AVIATION.

VFR conditions next 24 hours. A few showers possible over the Coast Range of western Tehama and Shasta Counties after 22Z. Local surface wind gusts 15-25 kts for the Delta and Central Valley, mainly after 22Z.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
