KEY MESSAGES
* Dry weather prevails through next week with warmer than normal daytime temperatures this weekend.
* Periods of increased breezes will pose minor impacts to aviation and recreation Sunday into Monday.
* A wetter and windier pattern continues to be delayed. Could see increased winds as early as Friday, with precipitation moving in Saturday.
DISCUSSION
We remain warm and dry today, with comfortable temperatures in the mid-60s to near 70 in western NV valleys and upper-50s to mid-60s in northeast CA and eastern Sierra communities. Winds will increase this afternoon along the ridges in response to a weak shortwave moving through on Monday. Expect west to southwest gusts of 15-20 mph in the Sierra from Tahoe northward and 20-30 mph in northern Lassen and northern Washoe counties. Ridgetop wind gusts will be upwards of 45 mph.
On Monday, the aforementioned weak trough quickly moves through Oregon. Winds across the region on Monday are similar to Sunday, but slightly stronger in northern Lassen and northern Washoe counties with gusts of 25-35 mph. This is a dry trough and no precipitation is expected. From Tuesday into Thursday a high pressure ridge moves through the region. Temperatures remain around 5-10 degrees above average, with overall light winds.
On Friday through next weekend, the trough in the eastern Pacific splits. A cut-off low forms and moves southward into southern CA, while our area remains in the middle of a deformation zone. During this time, the trough in the eastern Pacific slowly shifts east, with a strong cold front moving through the area around late Saturday into Sunday. Precipitation chances across the region have increased for Saturday and Sunday compared to prior guidance, with likely (60%+) chances in the Sierra by Sunday. The arrival of precipitation is looking toward late Saturday, with Friday now dry. This pattern has been difficult to pinpoint the last week, so changes to this forecast are likely. But, at least all of the ensembles are trending toward a more active pattern by the end of the week into next week. -McKellar

* KRNO: VFR conditions with light winds today, gusts increase up to 15 kts Monday. Valley inversions continue each morning, reducing slantwise visibilities.
