KEY MESSAGES
* Temperatures will cool slightly to near average today and tomorrow as weak weather systems brush by to the north.
* Gusty winds return today with recreation and fire weather impacts; dry and breezy conditions are also expected Friday.
* The holiday weekend continues to favor warm and dry conditions, however, be aware of fast and cold rivers and streams due to continued high Sierra snowmelt.
DISCUSSION
Temperatures today and tomorrow drop to near normal, due to two weak low pressure systems impacting the area. The low today will move along the OR border, bringing enhanced gusty winds areawide.
With high-res model guidance, wind gusts have dropped a bit; there is a 20-50% chance of wind gusts greater than 45 mph.
Impacts today will include difficult travel for high profile vehicles (especially in wind prone locations such as US-395 along Washoe Lake and US-95 along Walker Lake), choppy lake waters, hazardous boating conditions on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, as well as blowing dust in W NV Basin and Range.
Winds die down a bit Friday, with gusts up to 25 mph, primarily for W NV Basin and Range. However, precipitation chances increase Friday with showers and a stray thunderstorm or two possible along the OR border. Model upper air soundings show that the surface level is relatively dry, though, so any showers that do pop up may struggle to have any rain hit the ground.
Speaking of dry conditions, critical fire weather will be seen across W NV Basin and Range today due to low RHs and those aforementioned gusty winds. For more details, check out the fire weather discussion below.
The holiday weekend looks to be warm and dry, due to high pressure settling in to the north. Afternoon highs will be the highest on Sunday, with highs pushing the upper 80s to low 90s for valleys and W NV Basin and Range. Sierra communities can expect highs in the 60s and 70s. Rivers and streams will look appetizing to cool off in due to high Sierra snowmelt, but said rivers and streams will be running fast and cold. Even limited water exposure can pose the risk of hypothermia. Stay safe this weekend!

AVIATION
Widespread VFR conditions through the weekend with increased wind gusts of up to 30 kts for all terminals today. Additionally, periods of light LLWS and mountain wave turbulence will be possible. Winds Friday will be lighter with gusts up to 20 kts with zephyr-like winds returning Saturday for the holiday weekend.

FIRE WEATHER
Wind gusts of 30-40 mph combined with min RHs of 7-15% across much of western NV will produce elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions for 6-9 hours this afternoon.
Said critical fire weather conditions retreat Friday and into the weekend as gusty winds subside. However, min RHs will continue to be in the teens for W NV valleys and the mid 20s for Sierra communities. Thus, those celebrating the holiday outdoors this weekend are encouraged to pay extra attention to any activities that may cause fires. This includes camp fires, sparklers, dragging trailer chains, and target shooting.
