DISCUSSION
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 145 AM PDT Thu May 22 2025

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: Current satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies across the forecast area. Warm and dry conditions expected to persist today under a flat ridge of high pressure. A weak upper-level disturbance ahead of a southern-stream system will lead to some cumulus build-ups across far northern Nevada this afternoon.

Above-normal temperatures will continue, with highs ranging from the upper 70s to lower 80s. Southwest to west winds of 15-25 mph will result in breezy conditions, with gusts up to 35 mph. Winds are expected to subside tonight.

A stronger upper-level disturbance, combined with sufficient moisture and instability, will support a 15-20% chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly north of the I-80 corridor Friday afternoon and evening. Any precipitation that occurs is expected to be light, generally less than a few hundredths of an inch.

Highs will again reach into the upper 70s to lower 80s with overnight lows in the 40s and 50s. West to northwest winds of 10-20 mph will result in breezy conditions, with gusts up to 30 mph in central Nevada.

Weak trough energy over Eastern Nevada Saturday has enough moisture and instability to produce isolated (15 to 25% chance of)
showers and thunderstorms across Eastern Elko County, White Pine County, and portions of Eastern Eureka County and Northeastern Nye County. Any storms that develop are expected to produce less than a tenth of an inch of rain. Saturday night into Sunday high pressure builds in from the west which will keep the CWA dry and also push temperatures higher. Afternoon highs on Sunday will range from upper 70s to mid 80s, which will be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than Saturday afternoon.

Southwesterly flow aloft increases across Nevada on Memorial Day as another through approaches from the west. High temperatures Monday warm by another 2 to 6 degrees. Cumulus clouds are expected to build across much of the region Monday afternoon, with current model ensembles placing a 10-15% chance of thunderstorms across mainly Northern Elko County. Once again, any storms that may develop are expected to produce less than a tenth of an inch of rain.

Models continue to struggle with the timing and track that the west coast trough will take Tuesday through Thursday, and whether or not the trough will deepen into a closed low.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS: Current model agreement is good and did not deviate from current NBM runs.

AVIATION
(06Z TAFS)

VFR conditions are expected at all terminals through Thursday evening. Thursday afternoon wind gusts will be strong reaching 30-35KTs at all terminals before diminishing at all terminals except KTPH after sunset. No precipitation is forecast through Thursday evening.

FIRE WEATHER

Warm and dry conditions will persist through the weekend. Minimum relative humidity values are expected to be in the single digit to low teen range in central Nevada, with values generally above 20% to the north. Southwest to west winds of 15-25 mph will result in breezy conditions, with gusts up to 35 mph today.

A disturbance will support isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms (15-20%) across the northern fire zones of 437/438/469/470 Friday afternoon and evening. There is a 15-25% chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms across portions of the eastern fire zones Saturday afternoon and evening.
