Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1247 PM PST Mon Dec 11 2023
Synopsis
A relatively stagnant weather pattern prevails through the week ahead, with mild high temperatures and chilly morning low temperatures. A potential pattern change to wetter weather arrives late next weekend into early next week.
Mostly sunny skies are evident over interior NorCal via latest GOES- West imagery. Resultant temperatures are beginning to rebound across the region and are expected to peak in the upper 50s to low 60s throughout the Valley and adjacent foothills locations, with low to mid 50s over the mountains. Despite the presence of a shortwave trough moving through, quiet weather will prevail across the forecast area through midweek. The primary impacts from the shortwave will be increasing north to east winds, with strongest winds anticipated over the Sierra Tuesday into Wednesday. At this time, there is a 40 to 80% chance of wind gusts exceeding 25 mph over the Sierra. Following the shortwave passage, upper level ridging looks to build back in. This will keep the weather quiet and temperatures more or less similar from mid to late week.
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday)...
Upper ridge axis over the Intermountain West Friday progged to retrogress over the weekend, slowing progress of upstream closed upper low. Although clusters and ensembles still depict uncertainty, precipitation chances may return late next weekend into early next week as a troughing pattern develops over the Eastern Pacific and gradually approaches the region. The National Blend of Models introduces precipitation chances as early as Saturday night.
Overall precipitation amounts from WPC look light to moderate at this time into Monday with snow levels 6000 to 7000 feet. Highs in the Valley are expected to be in the low to mid 60s Friday through Sunday, lowering into the mid 50s to lower 60s Monday.
AVIATION
VFR conditions over interior NorCal next 24 hrs except local MVFR/IFR with isolated LIFR in BR/FG in the Valley, generally from KSMF southward, after 08z-10z Tuesday. Surface wind mainly below 12 kts through 12z Tuesday, then increasing northerly winds with gusts 15 to 25 kts across portions of the Valley.
