KEY MESSAGES
* Strong winds the rest of today and Monday with impacts to travel and recreation.
* Cool temperatures with light mountain snow and valley rain showers arrive Monday. Temperatures will warm the second half of the week.
* Gusty winds and chances for rain showers return for next weekend.
DISCUSSION
A low pressure system will reach the west coast this evening and cross northern Nevada Tuesday leading to gusty winds for the Sierra and western NV. Peak wind speeds will occur this afternoon and into tonight as the jet stream passes overhead. Gusts of 40-60 mph will impact travel and recreation for the Sierra, NE CA and western NV. Gusts over Sierra ridges may exceed 100 mph. Plumes of dust off dry lake beds may also reduce visibility for travelers along I-80 east of Fernley and US-50 east of Dayton. Monday also looks windy with speeds not as strong as today, gusts in the 30-50 mph range, but still enough to impact travel and recreation.
Showers with this weather system arrive early Monday AM for Lassen County, then spread south and east through Tuesday. Cooler air will lower the snow level down to near 5000 feet on by Tuesday morning. Liquid totals aren't overly impressive, less than 0.50 inch. Snow may not be much of an impact to roads, though slushy and/or slick Sierra passes are not out of the question. As the core of the low moves over NW NV Tuesday afternoon, instability increases for a 15-25% chance thunderstorms and lightning across the region.
Dry air and cool temperatures in the wake of this system may drop morning low temperatures to near freezing away from urban centers, so plan to protect any sensitive outdoor plants through Thursday AM. Otherwise afternoon temperatures warm starting Wednesday.
Next weather system of note may arrive for next weekend. No strong signals/confidence so far in the simulations for this system, but gusty winds may return Saturday with low chances (10-20%) for showers. Brong
AVIATION
Mountain wave turbulence and LLWS continue into Monday. At the surface, S/SW winds sustained 25-35 kts with gusts of 35-50 kts for all Sierra and western NV terminals into this evening with a lull at some locations during the overnight hours. Surface gusts of 30-45 kts return by mid-late Monday morning. Ridge-top wind gusts may reach 85 kts this afternoon into this evening, then slowly decline through Monday evening.
On Monday, precipitation will make its way into western Lassen County by early morning, then eventually into the Tahoe Basin by late morning. Areas of IFR/MVFR in precipitation and mountain obscurations likely into KSVE/KTRK/KTVL, lower chances in Mono County. Snow may mix in at times on Monday as low as 5000-5500 ft msl, but accumulations remain unlikely due to warm antecedent conditions.
Showers and a 15-25% chance of thunderstorms will move toward the southeast by Tuesday for Tahoe/KRNO/KCXP/KMEV/KMMH. Brong
