KEY MESSAGES
* Occasional showers and thunderstorms are expected through the afternoon around the Tahoe Basin and north of US-50.
* Gusty north winds may impact travel and recreation in Mineral and Mono counties this afternoon.
* Well below normal temperatures expected this weekend before warmer weather returns next week.
DISCUSSION
* Currently, isolated showers continue across Pershing County, around Pyramid Lake, and in the Tahoe area. Accumulations with this system have been light, with totals between 0.05-0.15" in Lassen and northern Washoe counties. This system has been cold enough to even allow for some light snow this morning in northern Washoe and the Werner mountains as evident of a snowy landscape on local camera networks. It has been a very windy few days across the area. Winds peaked yesterday, with gusts commonly 50+ mph, 60+ mph in wind prone areas, and 80-100 mph on the peaks.
* With the passage of the cold front, winds are much calmer today, generally from the north to northwest between 20-30 mph. The exception to this is in Mono County, which is still experiencing winds gusts between 35-45 mph and up to 60 mph on the peaks.
Today is around 15-20 degrees cooler compared to this time yesterday and up to 30 degrees cooler compared to 2 days ago.
With a cold airmass in place, freezing temperatures are likely tonight in the eastern Sierra, with lows well into the 20s.
* Ensembles still all show a trough pattern remaining over the area through Tuesday followed by weak riding into the end of the week. We'll have a slow warmup this week, with temperatures returning to seasonal averages by Wednesday. Mostly dry weather prevails this week aside from a 15-20% chance of afternoon showers and t-storms in the Sierra Monday and Tuesday. -McKellar
AVIATION
* N/NW gusts of 20-30 kts this afternoon for all terminals. Best chances (10-15%) of afternoon thunderstorms favor KTRK and KTVL with less than 10% odds elsewhere.
* Winds will continue to subside on Sunday and remain calmer this upcoming week. -McKellar
