Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 207 PM PDT Sat Mar 14 2026
KEY MESSAGES
* Gusty winds will pose impacts to recreation and travel this afternoon. Otherwise, mild weather prevails this weekend.
* Strong high pressure will result in historic March warmth next week.
* Dry and mild weather is favored through next weekend, but a more unsettled pattern is possible for the final week of March.
DISCUSSION
Post-frontal winds will remain breezy this afternoon with N/NW gusts of 25-35 mph presenting impacts to recreation and air/ground travel into the evening. This weekend will be a bit cooler than in previous days, but daytime highs will still run 5-15F above seasonal averages through Sunday.
Confidence remains high on historic March warmth next week as unseasonably strong high pressure overspreads the region. Sharp warming begins on Monday as temperatures will be about 10F warmer than Sunday. Tuesday through Friday will be the warmest days of the week as daytime highs reach the low-mid 70s across Sierra valleys and mid-upper 80s for NE CA and W NV valleys. Records will be shattered on a daily basis with a high likelihood (as much as 75%)
of Reno exceeding 83F during this period -- setting a new record for warmest March day. Snowmelt will likely accelerate in response to this anomalous heat spell, maintaining cold and fast flows on area waterways. High pressure will also keep the region dry through at least next weekend.
Extended guidance is still keen on high pressure breaking down around/after March 23, allowing the storm track to dip southward.
Whether that translates to a wetter, windier pattern during the final week of March is uncertain, but it's looking more and more likely that a pattern change of some flavor is in store to kick off spring.
-Salas
AVIATION
Increased N/NW breezes of 20-30 kts will continue to pose LLWS concerns until winds subside between 02z and 05z. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected this weekend and next week.
For next week, record warm temperatures may result in density altitude issues for western Nevada terminals.
