Synopsis
Isolated areas of mountain snow and rain with cooling temperatures today into the weekend.
Discussion
A shortwave trough will move over Northern California today and will see precipitation move through portions of the forecast area.
The Sierra will see isolated areas of mountain snow beginning this morning and continuing through tonight. Snow levels will be around 4500-5500 feet over the Sierra with lowering heights anticipated Friday morning. With this initial round of precipitation today, WPC has 0.10-0.50" over the Sierra. Heaviest precip. will be Thursday late afternoon into the evening and then linger over the Sierra south of Hwy. 50. NBM probabilities indicate a 45-85% chance of exceeding 2" over the Sierra and a 20-50% chance to exceed 4" along and south of I-80 for 24-hr mountain snow totals. There is a chance for light rain to move through the Valley, primarily from I-80 to Redding this afternoon and evening. NBM probabilities show a 20-55% chance of exceeding a tenth in the aforementioned area. Temperatures are expected to cool to the upper 50s in areas of more cloud cover with low 60s in the more southern portions of the Valley with breezy west winds in the Delta.
Friday and Saturday will see similar rounds of areas of rain/mountain snow chances, albeit lighter totals outside of areas of the Coastal and Southern Cascade Range. NBM probabilities show a 30-60% chance of exceeding 2" of mountain snow totals over the Sierra Friday and Saturday, outside a 40-70% chance in the Lassen Park area. WPC forecast show a tenth to a quarter of an inch over the foothills, up to near an half inch in the Coastal and Southern Cascade Range. Precipitation in the Northern Sac. Valley and Coastal Range are forecasted to be heaviest Saturday evening and night, trickling out through Sunday morning. Generally, as you move northward through the forecast area, totals increase for this weekend. Overall, conditions dry on Sunday as ridging moves back over the area and temperatures are expected to warm back to the low 60s in the Valley by early next week.
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday)...
Monday will see ridging continue to build through the northwest and slide eastward, inducing warmer temperatures over the forecast area. Monday and Tuesday will see Valley temperatures warm to the low to mid 60s with 50s and 40s over the foothills and mountains respectively. On Tuesday, the ridge will have moved into the Great Basin area and an upper level trough system begins to move into the Eastern pacific. This will allow for precipitation chances to possibly return, first over the mountains and northern Valley before spreading southward through the latter portions of next week. Current confidence remains relatively low and will be something of note to watch as we move closer to the back end of next week.
AVIATION
VFR conditions are expected to predominate for the next 24 hours except widespread MVFR/IFR over the northern Sierra with snow showers (especially 18Z thru about 06Z Friday), and local MVFR conditions possible northern San Joaquin Valley thru 17Z. Surface wind gusts generally below 12 kts.
