AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 244 PM PDT Sat May 17 2025
SYNOPSIS
Breezy winds and a few mountain showers continue this afternoon. Tonight some coastal clouds return with generally clear skies and breezy winds returning on Sunday. Monday the warmup starts, but there may be some clouds in the afternoon.
Tuesday and Wednesday additional warming is expected with highs around 90 inland. Cooler temperatures are expected late in the week.
DISCUSSION
A weather system moved through the area this morning and brought a few light showers or drizzle to Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Skies are expected to gradually clear across the area as this system moves out of the area. A few showers are possible over the mountains of Humboldt, Del Norte and northern Trinity counties. Tonight some of these clouds will likely settle into the valleys in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. This should keep temperatures in the upper 30s and limit frost in most areas.
The higher elevation valleys of Trinity county may see some frost so have issued a frost advisory for Hayfork, Weaverville and Douglas city as well as other nearby areas. Sunday afternoon gusty winds are expected once again with gusts to 35 mph in many of the more wind prone areas. High temperatures in the inland areas will be in the 60s to low 70s both days while the coast is expected to remain near 60.
Monday another weather system moves by to the north of the area.
This is expected to once again bring stratus to the coast areas.
The system moves by the area in the afternoon so this will still allow inland temperatures to warm to around 70 in the north to the low 80s in the south. The main impact expected is slightly cooler temperatures and some mid clouds. There is a chance for some light rain showers in Del Norte county, but probabilities are low for this. The NBM is only showing a ten percent chance of 0.01 inches in Del Norte county.
Tuesday and Wednesday this system moves past the area and high pressure builds in. Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day of the week in the inland areas with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 in the warmer valleys. Heat Risk increases slightly, but remains mainly in the minor category.
Thursday through Saturday the flow aloft is expected to become more zonal. This will allow temperatures inland to cool and the marine layer to become more robust. There will be some individual shortwaves moving through this that could bring some light rain, but overall it looks fairly dry. MKK
AVIATION
Satellite is showing low to mid level cloud cover over much of the area early this afternoon, but all the terminals remain VFR. Clouds are expected to slowly continue lifting and scattering into the evening, but some lingering clouds are possible overnight.
Gusty northerly winds are forecast to ease overnight, but UKI could still see a few isolated gusts through the night as there NW winds of 30-35 kts are still possible 1500-2000 ft AGL. Stratus likely returns to the Humboldt and Mendocino coasts tonight, with less certainty for the Del Norte coast. A weaker marine inversion will likely keep any ceilings MVFR or VFR. NBM is showing a roughly 50% chance for MVFR ceilings or worse at ACV, and a 30% chance for IFR ceilings or worse. CEC has around a 20% chance for MVFR ceilings or worse. Any low clouds are forecast to lift and scatter out shortly after sunrise and gusty northerlies are likely again Sunday afternoon. JB
MARINE
Elevated northerly winds this afternoon will ease this evening and overnight, especially north of Cape Mendocino. Short period seas are forecast to gradually diminish into the day Sunday here. South of the Cape, winds will increase and move closer to the coast Sunday afternoon, bringing strong breezes to near-gale force gusts up to 30 kts and short period seas. Winds ease some Monday as the pressure gradient weakens, but northerlies of return again late Monday into the rest of the week. On top of short period seas, a mid- period NW swell of around 8-9 ft will fill Tuesday, elevating significant wave heights further. JB
