Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 1243 PM PDT Mon May 19 2025
KEY MESSAGES
* Warm and dry weather prevails through midweek with streamflows running fast and very cold this week.
* Gusty winds return Thursday and Friday, resulting in travel, recreation, and fire impacts.
* The holiday weekend continues to lean towards a warm and dry scenario, although showers or a stray storm cannot be ruled out.
DISCUSSION
Steady warming begins today as high pressure amplifies overhead, yielding daytime highs in the upper 60s-70s for Sierra communities and upper 70s to mid-80s for western Nevada valleys throughout the week. Several days of warmer weather will likely induce accelerated snowmelt of what's left of the Sierra snowpack, so area streamflows may begin to run fast and very cold this week. Fortunately, flooding impacts are not expected.
A pair of weak low pressure areas will quickly traverse the PacNW states at the end of the week, resulting in a slight chance (10-20%)
of showers/storms near the OR border and windy conditions Thursday and Friday. A considerable swath of the western Nevada has at least a 20% chance of wind gusts exceeding 45 mph on Thursday and Friday with wind prone areas having as much as a 50-60% chance. Be prepared for travel impacts for those of you traveling ahead of the holiday weekend. Hazardous boating conditions are also likely on many area lakes Thursday and Friday, including on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake.
A few hours of elevated fire weather conditions appears plausible across western Nevada valleys Thursday and Friday afternoon as gusty winds overspreads 8-15% RH amid abundant sunshine.
Memorial Day weekend continues to favor warm and dry weather as high pressure extends back into the region. As a reminder, avoid cooling off in regional streamflows as they will likely be running fast and very cold, posing the risk of hypothermia. A few showers or a stray thunderstorm remain possible each afternoon this weekend given the likelihood of warmer surface temperatures.

AVIATION
VFR conditions with typical west breezes each afternoon will prevail over the next couple of days. KTRK/Martis Valley may see another brief period of IFR/LIFR conditions between 11-15Z due to BCFG/FZFG.
