Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 206 PM PDT Sat May 17 2025
KEY MESSAGES
* Showers and thunderstorms are expected through the afternoon, producing brief heavy downpours, gusty outflows, small hail, and lightning.
* Dry weather returns Sunday with breezy northwest winds impacting travel and recreation in the afternoon.
* Warming trend begins Monday with above normal temperatures for the middle of next week.
DISCUSSION
A robust cyclone and attendant cold front continue to support showers and thunderstorms across NE California and portions of western Nevada per 21Z radar obs. Latest CAMS suggest that the cold front will serve as the focus for additional showers and thunderstorms as it continues to advance south of I-80 before tapering off around 8-9 PM PDT. Potential impacts from thunderstorms include brief heavy downpours, gusty outflows, small hail, and lightning.
We'll begin to dry out on Sunday as our latest spring storm departs the region, although another day of breezy N/NW winds (gusts of 25- 35) are expected. Plan on choppy waters on Pyramid Lake, crosswinds along I-80 and US-50, and bumpy arrivals/departures from regional airports. A warming trend begins in earnest on Monday as high pressure aloft extended into the western states. A brief heat stint appears likely around midweek as daytime highs reach the 70s and 80s. A couple weak trough passages may provide some cooling and increased breezes late next week.

AVIATION
Thunderstorms remain the main concern through 04Z for KCXP-KMEV and Tahoe terminals as a cold front sweeps through western Nevada. Gusty outflows/sudden wind shifts and lightning will be possible with any thunderstorms. MVFR conditions are also likely with the heavier showers or thunderstorm that drifts near any terminal. Drier weather returns Sunday with breezy N/NW gusts of 20-25 kts during the afternoon.
