SYNOPSIS. The region will remain between strong low pressure over Eastern Canada and high pressure building southeast from central Canada into the Upper Midwest to start the weekend. The high will build across the area Sunday into Monday, and then shift to the south and east into the middle of next week. The high moves offshore Wednesday night and Thursday as a cold front slowly approaches from the west.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. Gusty NW winds of 25 to 30 mph (up to 35 mph possible) will continue into this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will average a good 10 degrees or so below normal despite the stronger March sun, mainly due to CAA continuing as 850 mb temps settle in at around -12 C.
For tonight, with the winds staying up and only settling down slightly for sheltered locations at times, temperatures should average a good 5 to 10 degrees below normal. Wind chills should mainly be in the teens, with a few locations well north having wind chills as low as 10 above.
SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/. The chilly airmass will remain over the northeast to begin the weekend for Saturday with weak cold advection gradually ending. With surface high pressure to the west on Saturday, the northwest flow will continue to dominate. Temperatures will remain up to 10 degrees below normal. The advection becomes more neutral into Saturday night as the deep NW flow takes on more of a westerly component. The pressure gradient should weaken just enough that the more sheltered locations should have the winds lighten enough that there may be some radiational effects, thus a slightly wider spread in temperatures late at night. Nighttime minimums should be mainly in the lower and middle 20s, with a few upper teens where the winds lighten.
LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Upper ridging will begin building into the eastern U.S. late in the weekend and into early next week, as a deep closed upper low over eastern Canada and the northeast weakens and slowly tracks east. Look for heights to gradually build afterwards through Wednesday. Deep northwest flow does continue through Sunday night as heights slowly rise with the approach of the ridge axis. Below normal temperatures are expected into Monday, however, weak warm advection begins to setup during Monday as low level winds gradually back, and a warming trend begins. The warming will then continue into the end of the week, with stronger warming expected Wednesday and Thursday as the surface high and upper ridge begin to move offshore. By Thursday temperatures may be as much as 10 to 15 degrees above normal seasonal levels. The southwesterly flow that does set up Tuesday through Thursday will keep temperatures along the coast several degrees lower as ocean water temperature remain in the lower 40s. A frontal system will be approaching for Thursday, however, the trend has been for the eastern ridge to be slower to move offshore as the trough deepens across the central U.S. As a result, will have low to slight chance probabilities for Thursday, with the possibility of Thursday remaining dry.
AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. The region remains between high pressure centered over central Canada and low pressure centered over eastern Canada.
VFR. Stratocumulus likely Saturday may produce ceilings around 4K ft mid-morning throughout the afternoon
Sustained NW winds around 20kt with frequent gusts around 30kt. Occasional gusts up to 35kt possible. Winds then diminish this evening, but still gusting 20-25kt. W-NW winds near 15kt with gusts to 20 kt possible Saturday.
. NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty .
Winds could vary on either side of 310 magnetic at any point this afternoon.
OUTLOOK FOR 12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY. Saturday. VFR. WNW winds 10-15G20kt. Saturday night through Wednesday. VFR.
Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: http:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90
MARINE. SCA conditions will continue into the early evening across the coastal waters. By the late evening for the western near shore waters conditions should fall below SCA criteria, but a few marginal gusts may continue through the night. During Saturday marginal small craft conditions are anticipated for the ocean waters and gusts to around 20 kts for the near shore waters.
Beginning Saturday night more tranquil conditions begin to take place, and this will be more noticeable into Sunday and early next week as high pressure dominates.
HYDROLOGY. The dry weather regime will continue, thus there are no hydrologic concerns into the middle of next week.
