SYNOPSIS. Low pressure, with a strong cold front east of the region, will move towards the Canadian Maritimes overnight into Thursday. Meanwhile, high pressure stays well to the south and west of the region. This high will start to build more into the region Thursday night but its center will remain well south and west of the region. High pressure south of the region Friday moves off the southeast coast Friday night and Saturday as a low approaches late Saturday. The deepening low will passes south of Long Island Saturday night and Sunday. High pressure builds in Sunday night and Monday, and settle over the area Tuesday, then moves off shore Wednesday.
NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/. Any shower activity is now well east of the area. The low continues to track north/northeast into the Canadian Maritimes tonight. Strong cold air advection continues the first half of the night, and weakens as the cold front continues to track off to the east through the overnight. As the low deepens, the pressure gradient will be strong, and the gusty northwest flow continues overnight. The winds will keep low levels dry, so no frost is expected. However, temperatures are expected across much of the interior to decrease to a 30-32 degree range, so freeze warning remains in effect across portions of northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley and interior southern Connecticut. The freeze warning goes from 2AM until 9AM Thursday. The rest of the region will be closer to the mid to upper 30s for lows. The wind chills will be going down into the 20s for much of the region.
SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/. High pressure center stays well to the south and west of the region Thursday through Thursday night, but does make some eastward movement into the region Thursday night.
Cyclonic flow aloft and gusty NW flow will make for a much cooler than normal day Thursday. Clouds will be abundant during the day. Highs will generally in the upper 40s to near 50, about 10-15 degrees below normal. The dry conditions and low RH values are mentioned below in the fire weather section. Wind gusts during the day are expected to peak with daytime mixing to around 40 mph. It is possible a few gusts could reach near 45 mph but feel those will be quite isolated.
Clouds and winds decrease Thursday night as more subsidence moves into the region. Wind gusts will not totally diminish though as the strong low is forecast to remain in the Canadian Maritimes. Another cold night is expected with forecast lows from the lower 30s across much of the interior to mid 30s to upper 30s for most other locations. Near 40 degree lows are forecast for NYC.
LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Deep closed low pressure over the Atlantic Canadian Provinces will be filling Friday as heights build across the Great Lakes and eastern states with zonal flow developing. Warm advection will be setting up and temperatures will rebound to near normal levels for Friday and Friday night.
The flow will be progressive as a southern stream shortwave over the southwest Friday quickly tracks to the southeastern coast by late Saturday. Mid and upper levels ridging remaining in place should keep any overrunning precipitation from reaching the area until late Saturday afternoon, when there may be a slight chance across the southwestern zones. Went slightly above the deterministic NBM temperatures for highs Saturday. The amplifying trough reaches the southeast coast by 12Z Sunday and phases with a northern trough. A coastal low develops near the Delmarva Saturday night and quickly deepens. With guidance consistency have increase probabilities to categorical Saturday night into Sunday morning. There is little CAPE or instability Saturday night into Sunday and do not expect any embedded convection.
A gusty flow develops behind the low late Sunday into Sunday night as the coastal low continues to deepen. Heights rise behind the departing upper trough Sunday night into Monday as a full latitude and highly amplified ridge builds from the Gulf coast states through eastern Canada by Wednesday. Temperature return to above normal Tuesday, and by Wednesday temperatures may be as much as 10 degrees above seasonal normals with a strong, and deep layered long fetch return flow as 850 temperatures near 15C.
AVIATION /03Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. A strong cold front moves further offshore into the overnight. High pressure then builds toward the area into Thursday.
VFR conditions through the TAF period.
WNW winds with gusts 30-35 kt at times through the overnight, and into Thursday.
. NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty .
No amendments expected.
OUTLOOK FOR 0Z FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY. Thursday night. VFR. W winds gusty early, then diminishing. Friday. VFR. WNW gusts 20-25kt. Saturday. VFR. Saturday night-Sunday. MVFR/IFR in rain. Monday. VFR.

MARINE. A Steep pressure gradient with strengthening low pressure moving into the Canadian Maritimes will set up a long period of gale force winds. Gale warning is in effect for all waters. The ocean gales are going through all of Thursday night while the non- ocean water gales go until 10 PM Thursday night. Non-ocean waters will likely retain SCA level winds thereafter for the rest of Thursday night.
Small craft advisory conditions will likely be on-going across the forecast waters Friday as a gusty west to northwest flow remains with deep low pressure over the Canadian Maritimes and high pressure southwest of the waters. Conditions gradually improve through the day and fall below SCA levels Friday evening as the low to the north weakens and the high builds to the south. Sub SCA conditions continue until late Saturday night.
Winds and seas will then be increasing, initially on the ocean waters, and then across all the waters Sunday morning as deepening low pressure moves off the Delmarva and tracks south of Long Island. Behind the low, late Sunday, winds turn to the northwest to west and remain gusty at SCA levels through Monday, diminishing in the afternoon. Gusts may approach gale force on the ocean waters Sunday night. Winds and seas will likely be below SCA levels across all the forecast waters by Monday night with high pressure over the waters.
FIRE WEATHER. Both Thursday and Friday may pose an elevated risk of wildfire spread due to low RH and gusty west winds. Min RH is slightly higher on Thursday with values mainly between 25 and 35 percent while on Friday they will be mostly between 20 and 30 percent.
Rainfall amounts on the order of 0.25 to 0.50 inches will likely factor into how quickly fine fuels can dry out. So, the greater risk for potential fire spread may come on Friday.
HYDROLOGY. No hydrologic impacts are expected through Wednesday of next week.
OKX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CT . Freeze Warning from 2 AM to 9 AM EDT Thursday for CTZ005>008. NY . Freeze Warning from 2 AM to 9 AM EDT Thursday for NYZ067>070. NJ .
