Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Medford OR Issued by National Weather Service Portland OR 131 PM PDT Mon May 12 2025
DISCUSSION
Satellite image shows the upper tough overhead with instability showers over portions of the area. Satellite also shows breaks in the cloud cover, but the cloud cover overall will increase during the afternoon. As we go further into the afternoon, the chance for isolated storms will increase some due to increasing instability from daytime heating. Showers are also expected to increase this afternoon.
Showers will gradually diminish this evening and tonight as we lose daytime heating. Could not rule out a couple of isolated thunderstorms early this evening. Showers tonight will be mainly isolated and confined to the Cascades, and east side.
Tuesday will be transition day with the upper trough moving south of the forecast area. Most locations will be dry, but could not rule out isolated showers along the Cascades, east of the Cascades, and north of the Umpqua Divide.
A moist northwest flow continues Wednesday, and Thursday, with a couple of weak disturbances moving through that could trigger isolated showers north of the Umpqua Divide, otherwise it will be dry with milder temperatures in the afternoon for the interior.
Friday is shaping up to be dry and mild for the interior, then at least the first half of the weekend could be cooler and unsettled. The operational models and several of the ensemble members suggest precipitation could be far and few Saturday morning, with showers increasing in the afternoon ahead of an approaching upper trough.
There’s good agreement once the upper trough moves through the area Saturday, upper ridging will build into the area Sunday into the early part of next week with dry and warmer weather.
