SYNOPSIS
High pressure remains in control into Wednesday, supplying seasonable temperatures and dry weather. Warming trend takes place Thursday. The next weather system brings the potential for mostly rain Thursday night into Friday, but some snow/mix is possible over the interior high terrain at night. Trending drier and cooler for this upcoming weekend.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/
230 PM Update:

This evening & overnight...

* Chilly night ahead

A ridge of 1030+ mb high pressure crest over the region tonight.
This combined with clear conditions, light winds and dew pts in the single digits and teens, will allow temps to cool rapidly after sunset. Given this setup derived mins from the colder MOS guidance.
This yields widespread lows in the teens. A few single digits possible in northwest MA and conversely, lows 20-25 in the urban areas, outer Cape, Nantucket and Block Island. These cold temps likely occur after midnight, then possibly leveling off or rising a few degs toward daybreak, especially along the coast as offshore low clouds approach the coastal plain.

SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/
230 PM Update:

* Dry weather continues, not as cold but more clouds, especially along/near the coast

Wednesday:

Low clouds/strato-cu currently south of Nova Scotia and trapped beneath the subsidence inversion, eventually drifts toward and into SNE in the developing return low level E-SE flow. Uncertainty in timing and areal extent of clouds inland Wed. Model consensus suggest more clouds along the coast and more sunshine inland.
Shallow cold airmass slowly modifies, but still a chilly day with highs from the mid to upper 30s along the coast (light onshore flow + more clouds), to around 40 inland (away from seabreeze + more sunshine). Light E-SE winds.

Wed night...

Increasing NE flow with ocean storm passing well southeast of the 40N/70W benchmark. This should spread low clouds farther inland for a mostly cloudy night. Expecting precip to remain offshore given ridging and dry airmass over SNE, along with subsidence on NW side of departing ocean storm. NAM & NSSL WRF are the farthest west, with rain shield getting close to ACK. Not as cold as tonight given more cloud cover. Seasonably cold with lows in the 20s regionwide.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
Highlights

* Trending warmer late this week

* Low-pressure system to bring mainly rain to southern New England some time Thursday night into Friday night

* Colder with dry weather this weekend

* Warmer, with a low risk for some precipitation Monday into Tuesday

Latest guidance is in reasonably good agreement with the overall pattern during this portion of the forecast. After dealing with a mid level northern stream trough late this week, the overall pattern looks like it may switch to a more active one next week.
While there could be more frequent rounds of precipitation, the timing of them usually suffers in these faster flow patterns.
Have the greatest confidence in the details into this weekend, with lower confidence in the details early next week.

Expecting a low pressure to pass southern New England by sometime Thursday night into Friday night. With no high pressure over southeast Canada to supply some colder air, this is looking more like a rain even, with the possibility of some mixed precipitation across the higher terrain of interior southern New England during the nighttime hours, both on the front end Thursday night and the back end Friday night.

Colder air expected to arrive as this system departs Saturday, with a marked drying trend. High pressure follows for Sunday, where the the increased sunshine should begin another warming trend into early next week.

A couple of fronts may be lingering nearby early next week.
However, very dry air expected to be in place for Monday. As the warming trend increases with this high pressure to our south toward mid week, humidity should also be on the increase. This could result in a low risk for some rainfall heading into Tuesday.

AVIATION /20Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
Forecast Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

18Z TAF Update:

This evening and overnight...high confidence. VFR, dry weather and light NE-SE winds becoming light & variable after sunset.
Low risk (10-30%) of MVFR cigs (BKN020) along the coast toward daybreak Wed.

Wednesday...Dry weather all terminals with VFR away from the coast, MVFR along and near the coast with cigs BKN020. Light E-SE winds. High forecast confidence.

Wednesday night...dry weather all terminals, except 10-15% probability of light rain at ACK 09z-12z Thu. VFR with isolated MVFR cigs BKN020 along the coast, then becoming more widespread overnight. Light east winds becoming NE toward Thu morning.
Moderate forecast confidence.

KBOS TAF...High confidence in TAF. Only uncertainty is timing and then duration of MVFR cigs (BKN020) Wed.

KBDL TAF...High confidence in TAF. Only uncertainty is Wed night, if MVFR cigs over RI and eastern-central MA pivot westward into CT.

Outlook /Thursday through Sunday/...

Thursday: VFR.

Thursday Night through Friday Night: MVFR with areas IFR. Mainly -RA, with some wintry mix across the higher terrain at night.

Saturday and Sunday: VFR.

MARINE
Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

230 PM Update:

Overall high forecast confidence.

High pressure remains over New England and its nearby coastal waters through Wed night. This will provide dry weather, good vsby and light E-SE winds. Only caveat will be offshore low tracking well southeast of the 40N/70W benchmark. This will yielding building SE swells into the waters of RI and MA, increasing Wed night and peaking Thu. SCA posted to highlight this. Rain shield may clip the waters southeast of Nantucket Wed night into early Thu.

Outlook /Thursday through Sunday/...

Thursday through Thursday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas 4 to 8 ft.

Friday: Winds approaching 25 kt. Seas 3 to 6 ft.

Friday Night and Saturday: Moderate chance for Small Craft Advisory winds. Seas 5 to 9 ft.

Sunday: Moderate chance for Small Craft Advisory winds. Seas 3 to 5 ft.

BOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES

MA...None.
