Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Binghamton NY 623 AM EDT Wed Sep 11 2024
SYNOPSIS
High pressure across the northeast, and a blocked pattern aloft over the central United States will persist through the rest of the week. As a result, there will be an extended period of dry conditions and warming temperatures lasting through the weekend.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/
615 AM Update...
Patchy fog remains present in the valleys. As the sun continues to rise, visibilities will improve as the fogs lift out.
Temperatures were touched up for the next few hours to better match the latest observations. Otherwise, the forecast remains on track.
300 AM Update...
Fog is slowly spreading through the valleys this morning, especially in areas that have stayed cloud-free for the last couple of hours.
High clouds have moved into the region from the west. Due to this, fog has been slower to develop. For any fog that can develop, it will completely lift out by mid-morning and could result in minor impacts for some higher elevated locations as it does.
Westerly flow will advect in warmer air, which will help temperatures climb into the 70s and low 80s, with valley locations having the best chance of exceeding 80. Overnight, light winds and mostly clear skies will be favorable for valley fog again.
Temperatures will also be slightly warm, only falling into the upper 40s to mid 50s. A ridge builds over the eastern half of the US, allowing heights to increase midweek. Temperatures trend warmer Thursday with highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s.
SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/
250 AM Update...
As the remnants of Francine slowly drifts northward after landfall, it will strengthen the ridge overhead. The remnant low looks to stall and slowly drift around in the southern US leading to a rex block that keeps strong ridging and high pressure in place for the late week into the weekend.
LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/
250 AM Update...
The rex block will remain in place into the early week before finally starting to break down towards mid week. Temperatures are expected to remain well above average with little to now chance of precipitation.
AVIATION /10Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
Once conditions improve at ELM, VFR conditions are expected for this TAF period. However, valley fog will be possible once again at ELM, so IFR/LIFR restrictions are expected after 06z Thursday. Surface winds will be light and variable.
Outlook
Thursday through Tuesday...Mainly VFR; valley fog possible most mornings with restrictions at ELM.
BGM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
PA...None.
NY...None.
