Updated AVIATION discussion for 18Z TAFs
DISCUSSION
Satellite image shows marine stratus along the coast and has made it's way inland over the coastal counties and gradually filling into portions of the Umpqua Basin. So far, surface observations have not reported rain or drizzle, just a low cloud deck with reduced visibility. Models do show light QPF in the above mentioned areas. However, this is more likely a result of the stronger marine push, deepening marine layer as opposed to actual precipitation. Even so, could not rule out patchy areas of drizzle this morning along the coast and over the marine waters.
Marine stratus will continue to fill into the Umpqua Basin between now and mid morning and get banked up along the Umpqua Divide, with some slipping just over the Divide, but the Rogue and Illinois Valley should remain clear with clear skies expected over the rest ofthe forecast area.
It will remain dry through Thursday. An upper trough will be moving towards the area from the northwest Thursday afternoon. The net result will be slightly cooler afternoon temperatures for the interior and gusty afternoon and early evening breezes east of the Cascades and interior westside valleys.
The upper trough will settle over the area Friday and Saturday.
The upper trough is pretty strong for this time of the year and is likely to result in much cooler temperatures (15-20 degrees below normal) for the interior with showers likely west of the Cascades Friday afternoon, then over most locations Friday night through Saturday. Instability parameters suggest instability is marginal at best and there was not enough evidence to support a mention of thunder Friday and Saturday, but this will need to be looked at again.
The cool and unsettled weather will be short lived with dry and much warmer weather returning by the start of next week, but there is some evidence suggesting another upper trough could settle back into the Pac NW late next week. -Petrucelli
AVIATION
18/18Z TAFs...Marine clouds remain along the Oregon coast and into the Umpqua Valley, but satellite imagery and local observations show this layer is starting to clear out. VFR levels are expected across the area this afternoon, with normal diurnal wind changes. Marine stratus looks to bring coastal areas back to MVFR levels tonight, but clouds could clear out before Thursday afternoon. -TAD
MARINE
