SYNOPSIS
Scattered lake effect snow showers linger through this morning north of the NY Thruway. Otherwise it will be partly sunny and cold areawide this afternoon. Thursday features plenty of sunshine with warmer temperatures forecast. The weather turns unsettled with periods of rain for Friday and cool temperatures.
The weekend will have additional shower chances with mild, above average temperatures prevailing.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/
845 AM Update...
Weak isentropic lift out ahead of an approaching warm front is causing some very light flurries across Central NY this morning.
Added flurries to the forecast for the next couple of hours, but forecast soundings show the loss moisture through the DGZ this afternoon, so brought an end to flurries during the early afternoon. A dusting will be possible, but not expecting much more than that for accumulations.
640 AM Update...
The Lake effect warning for northern Oneida and advisory for southern Oneida were Cancelled, as latest radar and observational trend show the lake effect weakening and gradually lifting north. Some of the web cams did show some light snow over northern Oneida county, where up to another inch could still accumulate through mid morning. Heavy snow was still occurring just north of the Oneida/Lewis county border, in and around the Osceola NY area.
430 AM Update...
The main concerns in this period are the lake effect snow tapering off this morning, lingering cold temperatures today and tonight. The weather then turns quiet and mild for Thursday, with mostly sunny skies. Cancelled the lake effect snow warnings/advisory early for S. Cayuga, Onondaga and Madison counties as most of these zones are no longer expecting any additional snowfall. The Lake effect snow warnings and advisory for northern and southern Oneida, respectively remain in effect until 7 AM EST this morning.
The lake effect snow off of Lake Ontario is now streaming across central Oswego county right into Oneida county...mainly along and north of I-90. Within this main lake effect snow band, visibilities are under 1 mile with at least moderate snowfall rates being observed...the very heavy snow is closer to the lake, outside of our forecast area across Central Oswego county (i.e. Pulaski, Parish, Mexico)...however some of this higher snowfall intensities could make it into NW Oneida county over the next few hours...especially for locations such as Camden, Florence, Point Rock and Glenmore. In these locations another 1 to 3 inches of snow is forecast by daybreak. Further away from the lake the snow is lighter and only up to another inch or so is expected for the Mohawk Valley locations.
The latest CAMs all show the snow lifting north, out of Oneida county by mid-morning. The rest of today will then feature partly sunny skies with breezy southwest winds and cold highs in the upper 20s to mid-30s.
The weather remains quiet heading into tonight as a warm front lifts through the region. This front could spark off some flurries or a snow shower mainly over Oneida county's Tug Hill region. Otherwise there will be partly cloudy skies overnight with southerly winds 8 to 15 mph. These winds and periods of clouds will keep it from getting too cold, with lows in the 20s areawide. This front continues to lift further north heading into Thursday with increasing south winds 10 to 20 mph. Skies will be mostly sunny through the day and temperatures warm to well average levels, into the 40s for afternoon highs.
SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/
220 AM Update...
Weak upper level ridge moves in on Thursday with quiet weather expected over our region. Low level flow shifts southwest allowing temperatures to warm into the low to mid 40s in the afternoon.
Partly to mostly sunny skies are expected for most of the day with clouds beginning to move in Thursday night as the next system approaches. Temperatures overnight remain mostly above freezing with lows ranging in the low to mid 30s.
Moisture deprived cold front along with a surface low approaches our region from the northwest on Friday. Temperatures at 850 mb suggest that this system will mostly likely be a rain event.
Highs are again expected to climb into the low to mid 40s in the afternoon with overnight lows in the low to mid 30s. The potential for a mix of rain and snow may be possible Friday night into early Saturday morning. This would be the case if the precipitation is slower to move out or if colder air pushes in a little sooner. Overall rainfall totals Friday into Friday night are at most ranging from 0.25 to 0.50 inches. If snowfall were to occur snow accumulations are also looking light at this time.
LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
220 AM Update...
More unsettled weather is expected during the weekend as another quick-moving shortwave will move up from the southwest on Saturday.
This brings a low chance of rain showers to the region as there are slight differences in the track of this system in model guidance.
Soon after, a developing surface low over the Midwest Sunday looks to move over the Great Lakes later in the day and into Sunday night and tap into moisture from a low forming over the Southeast that treks northeastward. Temperatures continue to hover in the 40s allowing more rain to fall with this system.
A similar pattern continues into early next week as temperatures will be warm enough to support rain during the day and fall close to freezing overnight allowing a mix of rain and snow to sneak back in.
Model guidance agrees on an upper level low dipping in from Canada Monday into Tuesday. This upper level low spins eastward and out of our region by Wednesday sending possible shortwaves behind it.
AVIATION /14Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
645 AM Update
Some light lingering snow showers or flurries will be possible at RME, BGM and ITH for the next hour or two, but restrictions are no longer expected.
Therefore, all of our taf site are now forecast to remain VFR through the period, with just intermittent mid level clouds over the region through the day and evening hours.
Winds will be westerly, 5 to 15 kts, shifting southwest and southerly later today into tonight between 8-15 kts.
Outlook...
Thursday...VFR. High confidence.
Friday...Restrictions likely, especially afternoon and evening as a weather system brings rain and fog to the area. Some wet snow could mix at times over the hilltops.
