SYNOPSIS
High pressure provides quiet weather pattern through Friday morning. Then a quick shot of light rain late Friday into very early Saturday morning. An active weather pattern late Saturday into early next week, but lots of uncertainty on how things evolve at this point. Temperatures trending near to below normal as we head into the middle of the week.
NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/
Update: 10 AM
Minor adjustment to sky cover over the Islands due to strato cu that has developed off the westerly wind. Do expect those clouds to dissipate in the next couple of hours with the wind dropping to the southwest. Otherwise forecast remains well on track.
Please see previous forecast discussion below.
300 AM update...
* Noticeably milder today, although seasonable for late November
Mid level warm front moving across SNE during the predawn hours and is accompanied by SCT-BKN mid level cloudiness. As this feature moves east, expecting decreasing clouds later this morning, giving way to partly to mostly sunny conditions. Low level WAA results in 925 mb rising from -2C at 12z to about +4C by 00z. This will support highs this afternoon in the 40s to near 50 along the south coast, as SW winds stream across SSTs in the low 50s. These highs are right on track for this time of year, but will feel noticeably milder than the past two days. This combined with a fair amount of sunshine, will provide tranquil weather for the last day of Nov. A bit of a SW breeze with speeds from 10 to 15 mph, gusting up to 20 mph across Cape Cod and the Islands. Overall, a very nice day for this time of year.
SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/
300 AM update...
* Temps rising into the low/mid 50s Fri for RI & eastern MA
Warm sector airmass slowly advects up the eastern seaboard, with dew pts rising into the 30s Friday, except low 40s across RI and eastern MA. Dry weather prevails Thu night and not as chilly as past nights, as airmass continues to modify. Lows Thu night, 30s regionwide with low 40s Cape Cod and the islands.
Friday begins dry along with some morning sunshine, then increasing clouds as next short wave and WAA precip approaches from the SW.
Modest low/mid level SW jet will provide WAA rains to overspread the area late in the day from west to east. SW flow will advect 925 mb temps to about +7C across much of SNE. Despite increasing clouds, strong low level WAA will yield highs to climb into the low and mid 50s, 40s across the interior. SW winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph possible across Cape Cod and the Islands.
LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
300 AM update...
Highlights
* Quick shot of light rain late Fri into early Sat.
* Active pattern late Sat through early next week. Mostly weak/progressive systems, but could see a stronger system early next week. Details still uncertain at this point. Temps trending near to below normal.
Friday Night through early Saturday...
A progressive deamplifying shortwave will be situated over the eastern Great Lakes Fri eve. The shortwave quickly lifts into Nova Scotia by very early Sat AM. A fast moving frontal system moves through.
A quick shot of light rain expected with this system. One change made in the latest update was to ramp down PoPs much quicker than the default NBM. This falls more in line with the latest deterministic and ensemble guidance. Would actually not be surprised if we need to continue dialing back PoPs on the back end as am anticipating a 3-6 hr period of light rain as the upper forcing quickly moves through. Will be mild with overnight lows in the mid/upper 30s across the interior and the low/mid 40s for the coastal plain.
Later on Saturday into early next week...
Active pattern with several shortwaves/troughs lifting into and through the region as flow becomes more cyclonic. As was the case yesterday is quite difficult at this point to time specific disturbances along with there intensity and locations as guidance is all over the place. There are signals for a more amplified system in the Mon/Tue timeframe, but still considerable uncertainty.
At this point the ECMWF/EPS continues to lean toward a stronger system in the Mon/Tue timeframe. The GEM/GEPS is a sort of middle ground, while the GFS/GEFS leans toward a weaker solution. Would like more consistency amongst guidance before getting into specific details. For now have just stuck with the default NBM given the uncertainty. The NAEFS SATA table highlights wind speeds being 2-2.5 STD above model climatology, but mostly in the zonal component of the wind (west-east). We've also got PWATs between 2-3 STD above model climatology. Definitely will need to keep an eye on how things evolve in the coming days.
Confidence a bit higher in temps trending near to perhaps cooler than normal for this period.
Mid week...
Drier weather anticipated during this timeframe. At this point odds will favor cooler than seasonable temperatures with flow becoming NW/Nly for much of the period. This will filter in -5 to -10 degree Celsius temps at 925 hPa. This matches up nicely with CPCs latest 6- 10 Day temp outlook of odds being slightly tilted toward below normal temps.
