Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 630 AM EDT Sat Aug 8 2020

SYNOPSIS. Weak high pressure keeps the weekend mostly dry but unsettled conditions loom nearby so can't rule out isolated to scattered rain showers this weekend. Otherwise the forecast period will be highlighted by increasing heat and humidity into next week with occasional chances for showers and thunderstorms, especially mid week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/.

630 AM . Minor ESTF update to reflect the current mesonet and radar trends in near term grids.

Prev Disc . At 06z . a 1022 millibar ridge was draped across the area. A wavy frontal boundary extended from the DELMARVA then offshore to the south of Long Island. GOES water vapor imagery showed an impulse over upstate New York with an area of mid and high clouds along and ahead of this feature crossing southern and central New England. NWS Doppler Radar was also showing widely scattered echoes associated with the mid cloud deck along the Connecticut valley For today. the impulse will slide east across the area this morning with widely scattered convection and exit the coast this afternoon Behind this feature. we may see sufficient heating for widely scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon across the interior. Highs today will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s . but a few degrees cooler at the immediate coast given expected onshore flow.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/. Mostly clear tonight under weak ridging . with some patchy late night valley fog developing. Lows will range from the mid 50s to lower 60s On Sunday. partly sunny and a bit more humid with highs in the 80s. An impulse and weak surface reflection will approach from the Great Lakes late in the day. This disturbance and daytime heating should produce some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms across the mountains during the afternoon and early evening hours on Sunday.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/. ***Increasing heat and humidity will be the theme for next week***

Building heat early next week: A deep and broad southwesterly flow will develop on Monday throughout the Northeast. Heat and humidity will begin to build. H8 temperatures of around +16C and plenty of sunshine will allow for temperatures to climb into the mid 80s to lower 90s away from the coast. Southernmost New Hampshire may briefly see heat indices of 95 degrees for a couple of hours as dangerous heat builds in that portion of the state. Along the immediate coastline, afternoon sea breezes will allow for slightly cooler readings.

Heat continues through much of next week: Temperatures may climb a few degrees warmer during the period Tuesday through Thursday with increasing dew points as well. All in all, very warm and hot conditions can be expected for a few days. Some interior locations will have yet another heat wave which is 3 consecutive days of 90 degrees or higher. Along the coastline, afternoon sea breezes should offer some relief from the heat.

Model trends: 00Z model guidance continues to depict a relatively large, upper level low pressure system over central Canada moving gradually east during the week. For the most part, this system will be too far to our north to bring meaningful areas of precipitation to the region. However, one short wave rounding the base of the trough will trigger convection across much of the region on Tuesday. Another day for more widespread precipitation will be on Thursday as a weak frontal system attempts to cross the region. Otherwise, only widely scattered, mainly diurnally driven afternoon and evening showers can be expected.

Precipitation changes: Despite the chance for a shower or thunderstorm each day this week, some areas will remain dry, especially along and near the coastline where sea breezes will dampen convection attempting to develop.

AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Short Term /through Sunday/ . Widely scattered MVFR today in -SHRA and isold -TSRA . otw VFR expected. Lcl IFR developing in valley stratus and fog btw 08 and 12z Sunday. Widely scattered MVFR possible Sunday afternoon and evening in -SHRA/-TSRA. Long Term . VFR conditions expected through Monday with isolated areas of MVFR conditions across northern areas with brief, isolated showers and thunderstorms. VFR/MVFR expected the rest of the week with mainly afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms possible, especially across northern areas. The greatest chance for precipitation will be on Thursday.

MARINE. Short Term /Through Sunday/ . Gradient remains light across the waters through Sunday with winds and seas below SCA.

Long Term . Winds and seas will remain below SCA thresholds with the exception of possibly a few gusts near 25 knots and seas Tuesday night into Thursday.

GYX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ME . None. NH . None. MARINE . None.

NEAR TERM . Schwibs SHORT TERM . Schwibs LONG TERM . Cannon

It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
