KEY MESSAGES

- Cooler temperatures and rain chances linger through the end of the week for eastern upper

- Cooler temperatures and clouds linger for northern lower today and Friday

- Drier conditions for northern lower this weekend could lead to frost concerns Friday and Saturday nights.

UPDATE
Issued at 924 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025

Updated for a more optimistic forecast west of I-75 today.
Though eastern areas remain damp and gloomy, the morning has started out excessively sunny nearer Lake MI in nw lower MI, and west of I-75 in eastern upper. Cloud cover will gradually back up westward in the eastern UP, but will be slower to do so for the nw lower MI coastal counties. Have also boosted max temps a couple of degrees in the sunnier locales. We would be capable of a lot more, but breezy north winds off of the chilly Great Lakes will temper our temp rise.

SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
Issued at 311 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025

Current radar and satellite show stratiform clouds and light rain over most of the lower penisula of MI this morning. Over the last 6 hours up to a quarter of an inch of rain has fallen over the central Lk Huron coast as areas directly adjacent. Areas west have only gotten a couple hundredths during this time. The polar jet is to MI's south with a broad area of lower upper level heights over the great lakes region. Continental moisture is trapped under this feature, and will keep wet and cool conditions around for today and Friday in some spots. The focus of rain will be over the Lk Huron coast, tip of the mitt. A piece of energy will rotate over MI from the north Friday, creating just enough lift for light shower activity over the higher terrain of northern lower as well. Partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures will linger for most of the area through the end of the work week. Very little to no chances for convective elements in this rain (besides from lake induced rain shower activity Friday), leading to mostly longer duration stratiform rain which should limit rainfall amounts a quarter to a half inch over the next 48 hours. North winds will back northwest Friday, and will be breezy each afternoon.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
Issued at 311 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025

Drier air will move in from the west in the lower levels, but continental moisture will remain trapped over eastern upper and parts of northern lower this weekend. One can expect partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures for most areas this holiday weekend.
The colder and drier air near the surface will result in frost concerns for interior locations of NW lower Friday and Saturday night. Light rain chances continue for parts as well as a weak shortwave will rotate through Saturday. Areas that do seen more sun will be able to warm into the 60s, however lots of places will be stuck in the 50s both afternoons. Winds will be light. Although the forecast isn't the best beach weather, there isn't any significant or impactful weather forecasted. If you are planning to enjoy the beaches this holiday weekend, water temperatures remain in the 40s which is cold enough for hypothermia concerns.

An unsettled pattern continues into next week with rain chances, clouds and cooler temperatures lingering through mid week next week.

AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z FRIDAY/
Issued at 640 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025

IFR CIGs have developed across KAPN, and will continue through much of the TAF cycle as SCT -SHRA pivot into the site. Most other terminals will be dropping to MVFR at times today, lesser chance for KTVC and KMBL. Although uncertain, do have a brief period of MVFR at KTVC this morning, but enough of a signal to include in the 12Z TAF. Northwest winds will remain breezy today once again with SCT -SHRA focusing across northeast lower and eastern upper today, pivoting across the entire region later tonight into Friday. CIGs begin to lower tonight, with prevailing MVFR to IFR conditions most areas.
