KEY MESSAGES
- Lake Effect continues to diminish today
- Successive Clipper Systems into early next week.
DISCUSSION

- Lake Effect continues to diminish today
Downsloping west to northwesterly flow will continue this morning with dwindling lake effect snow showers continuing through the morning. Any accumulations will be light. Winds will shift to the southwest bringing drier air and perhaps some afternoon sunshine, especially along the I 94 corridor. Temperatures today will be around normal, with high's in the upper teens to low 20s.
- Successive Clipper Systems Saturday into Sunday
A brief weak ridge will move through late today with flat, zonal flow moving overhead tomorrow. There is a rather shallow trough that will drop in the midst of this flow late tonight into Saturday. Any consequential moisture will be north of I 96 with perhaps 1 to 3 inches possible.
A slightly deeper trough will drop down overhead Saturday night into Sunday bringing a strong cold front with perhaps another shot of cold air and another chance of snow by Sunday morning. As of now, a widespread 1-2 inches of snow is possible. However given that the tight gradient from the trough will bring good omega values across the lake, it will once again fuel the Lake effect engine Saturday night into Sunday with some models forming a band that could stretch across southern lower Michigan. However, the moisture is shallow with soundings not having a deep DGZ. Locally heavier amounts could be possible along the lakeshore but will see as the event draws closer. Sunday will see colder temps return with temperatures rising back into the low 30s by early next week. Another chance for snow will return late Monday into Tuesday as the march of the clippers continues.
AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SATURDAY/
Issued at 1228 AM EST Fri Jan 24 2025
Residual lake effect snow showers continue to taper off this morning. Most sites at the beginning of the period are VFR, with some patches of MVFR and even high end IFR under some of the heaviest isolated snow showers. The snow showers will continue to diminish, and visibilities should stay VFR after the next 2-4 hours. Ceilings are VFR, but are forecast to drop down to MVFR overnight with less mixing taking place. Eventually the MVFR ceilings will lift to VFR this afternoon, and even clear out for a few hours toward 19-23z.
Some mid clouds will move over kMKG late in the period, toward 04-05z. There even could be some light snow come out of it. We do not expect conditions below VFR with that late period cloud cover through 06z.
