DISCUSSION
Issued at 321 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025
Precip Chances & Cloud Trends:
Some low clouds and spotty drizzle/sprinkles (with a few flakes possibly mixing in) will continue across northern WI early this morning as a cold/northerly flow prevails over Lake Superior and an upper low pushes across the western Great Lakes. This activity will wane through the morning as the upper low weakens and wobbles east of the region. Then it is looking dry for this afternoon into Saturday morning. Any areas of clearing early this morning will likely fill in with clouds as lingering moisture and cold air aloft will allow convective clouds to form as the surface heats up. These clouds will stick around for much of the day, scattering out for some later this afternoon and evening, especially toward central WI.
Weak high pressure will keep much/all of the Memorial Day weekend dry across the area. However, an upper level trough over Canada will gradually sag south through early next week, along with a couple weak shortwaves. This will bring small chances for showers, mainly during the afternoon hours during peak heating/instability.
Best chances for a more widespread rain will occur toward mid-week (late Tuesday into Wednesday) as low pressure tracks southeast of the region and an upper trough moves through the Great Lakes.
Temps & Frost/Fog Potential:
It will be another cool day today, with highs ranging from the low 50s in far north central WI and near Lake Michigan to the mid 50s to low 60s in central WI. For tonight, the chilly airmass will allow temps to fall into the 30s to low 40s. Winds will also be dropping off to under 10 mph and likely under 5 mph across much of central and north central WI. This will lead to some frost development. Only issue will be cloud cover over northern WI, especially closer to the MI border. Will hold off on a Frost Advisory, but one may be needed for portions of north central WI tonight. Better conditions for widespread frost will be Saturday night into Sunday morning with less clouds and lighter winds.
Temps will slowly but steadily climb this weekend into early next week, with near normal temps for the early/mid part of the week and slightly above normal readings possible by the end of next week. Where/when skies stay clear at night, some patchy ground fog could develop during the early morning hours through the weekend.
AVIATION
for 18Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1250 PM CDT Fri May 23 2025
Ceilings should lift to VFR in the afternoon and evening before gradually scattering out again overnight. Any remaining wind gusts will diminish during the overnight period as well. As a result, apart form some brief MVFR ceiling in north-central Wisconsin, the TAF period will largely see good flying conditions.
GRB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
Frost Advisory from 3 AM to 9 AM CDT Saturday for WIZ005-010>012- 018-019-030-035-036.
