SYNOPSIS
An upper level trof crosses the region tonight, then exits across the Maritimes Wednesday. A warm front will cross the region Wednesday night into Thursday. A front will cross the region Friday. High pressure approaches from the west Saturday.
A low pressure system may impact the region early next week.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
An upper level trof crosses the region tonight. The trof exits across the Maritimes early Wednesday, while a final disturbance moves through the trof. Surface ridging then builds across the region Wednesday afternoon. Expect mostly/partly cloudy skies across northern portions of the forecast area tonight with decreasing snow shower chances. Little or no snow accumulation is expected. Across Downeast areas tonight, expect partly cloudy/mostly clear skies. Isolated snow showers are also possible early. Could still have an isolated snow shower early Wednesday across northern areas with the exiting upper trof.
Otherwise, generally expect partly sunny skies north with mostly sunny skies Downeast Wednesday. Low temperatures tonight will range through the teens north, to the upper teens to lower 20s Downeast. High temperatures Wednesday will range from the lower to mid 20s north, to the upper 20s to around 30 Downeast.
SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/
A weak system over Canada will drag a warm front across the area. This will bring increasing clouds through the night. A few snow showers are possible in the Crown of Maine late Wednesday night into early Thursday. Otherwise, the region will stay dry. Low temperatures will occur early in the night, with teens in the North and 20s near Bangor and Downeast.
Temperatures then rise late as the front passes through and winds shift to the south. Thursday will be a dry day, save for perhaps an isolated snow shower in the North Woods. With warm air advection, it will be a milder day. Highs are forecast to be in the lower to mid 30s north of Katahdin and upper 30s to lower 40s to the south.
A cold front then approaches the region from the northwest Thursday night into Friday. There will not be much moisture with this front. However, a few rain or snow showers are possible with the front, mainly in the North. Ahead of the front, expecting lows Thursday night ranging from the upper 20s to mid 30s. Highs on Friday are forecast to mainly be in the 40s. It will be breezy as well on Friday, with southwest winds gusting 20-30 mph.
LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/
The aforementioned front will stall near the coast Friday night with a weak wave riding along it. This will keep the threat of precipitation from the Central Highlands southward Friday night.
Thermal profiles suggest light rain will fall near Bangor and Downeast. Some light snow is possible over the Central Highlands. Any precipitation ends before daybreak Saturday as high pressure builds in. Temperatures will be colder on Saturday versus Friday.
Below average confidence forecast for Sunday into early next week due to model disagreements. The GFS and its ensembles show two low pressure systems impacting the region. The first on Sunday and then another for Tuesday into Wednesday. The first system would bring accumulating snow to the North with rain or mix further south. The second system would favor snow from the Central Highlands southward.
The CMC and ECMWF models both show a single system impacting the area Sunday night into Monday and perhaps Tuesday. A low pressure system would track into the Great Lakes. Then it would transfer its energy to a secondary low near the Mid-Atlantic coast and track to the south of Maine. This scenario would bring accumulating snow to much of the region.
Given the uncertainty, leaned heavily on the NBM for PoPs for Sunday through early next week. This kept PoPs mainly at chance, with some low-end likely PoPs at the coast early Monday. P-types will ultimately depend on storm track. We will continue to monitor and update this forecast as needed.
