Synopsis for the northern and central washington coastal and inland waters..A broad surface ridge will remain centered over the coastal and offshore waters today. A thermally induced trough will expand northward along the coast on Thursday before shifting inland this weekend. A frontal system will approach the waters on Sunday with another round of possible headlines.

SYNOPSIS
Upper ridging offshore will build further into the Pacific Northwest through this weekend. Areas of morning fog both Thursday and Friday. Drier, warmer weather with the ridge into early Sunday. A frontal system will move towards the area late weekend into Monday for increasing rain and winds. Onshore flow expected into mid-week.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/
Clouds are clearing this afternoon, especially King County southwards and across portions of the Olympic Peninsula, with lingering stratus along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Snohomish County northward. Clearing will continue through this evening as ridging builds further into Western Washington. Lighter winds tonight, along with abundant moisture at the surface, will lead to the development of fog for areas of Western Washington, with dense fog possible in spots. Fog and areas of potential stratus into Thursday morning, with generally clear conditions Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

Another period of fog is expected Friday morning, though perhaps a bit less widespread as winds transition more offshore. The upper ridge will be situated over the Pacific Northwest Friday before slowly moving eastward on Saturday. Temperatures will warm significantly both Friday and Saturday. NBM suggests approximately a 30% chance of reaching 80 degrees on Saturday for KSEA. Otherwise, highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s Friday, with widespread 70s and low 80s away from the water on Saturday.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
The ridge axis will slide eastward on Sunday as upper troughing develops across the NE Pacific. Increasing clouds are expected Sunday along with slightly cooler temperatures, generally in the 60s to 70s. In addition, a frontal system will approach Western Washington Sunday night for increasing rainfall along the Olympic Peninsula during this period. Heavier rain along with breezy winds are expected with this front Monday into early Tuesday. Onshore flow is expected to continue on Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday. Uncertainty in ensembles increases mid- week in regards to continued troughing or perhaps a ridge building to the south, however have continued with precipitation potential for Wednesday. Temperatures will be cooler Monday through Wednesday due to the troughing influence. JD

AVIATION
An upper ridge offshore will continue to nudge closer to W WA this evening, with northwesterly flow aloft continuing over the region. A mixed bag of conditions out there this afternoon, with VFR/MVFR mainly through the interior terminals, and IFR/LIFR at coastal terminals and up north around KBLI. Per satellite imagery, low clouds have begun to slowly scatter out this afternoon. Gradual improvement to the ceilings will continue late this afternoon into the evening, where a rebound to VFR will be possible around 22-00z. Another round of patchy fog and low clouds are possible early Thursday morning across the area - with generally MVFR/IFR conditions and localized pockets of IFR possible. Winds will remain rather light through the overnight hours, which could enhance fog development especially in the early morning hours of 08-12z.

KSEA...Low clouds have scattered out this afternoon, rebounding back to VFR conditions. W/SW winds have been rather light this afternoon, and will take a northerly component around 22-00z.
Low clouds and fog will likely return to the terminal early Thursday morning, around 08-11z, with a 30% chance of LIFR ceilings by 14z. Winds will turn northeasterly into Thursday morning and start increasing in speed, around 5 to 10 knots by 18z.

MARINE
Surface ridging continues offshore, with generally light and benign conditions over the area waters. Areas of fog will be possible across the interior waters Thursday morning, perhaps reducing visibility at times. A thermally induced trough will push northward along the coastline on Thursday and will help turn the flow offshore, with easterlies through the Strait of Juan De Fuca possibly reaching SCA strength into Friday. Offshore flow will mainly continue into Saturday when the thermal trough shifts inland.

A stronger frontal system will start to near the coastal waters Sunday night into Monday for potential small craft advisory southerlies over the waters and elevated seas.

Coastal seas 4 to 6 feet through Thursday before subsiding around 2 to 4 feet into the first half of the weekend.
