Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 939 AM PDT Tue Oct 19 2021

SYNOPSIS. Quiet weather will remain in place for today with slightly warmer than average temperatures. A noticeable shift towards active weather will occur Wednesday as a series of systems make their way through Western Washington for the remainder of the week. These systems will bring widespread rain to the area, some breezy to windy conditions at times as well as high mountain snow.

SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Still some lingering fog out there, mainly limited to the south Sound and SW interior /Olympia, Tacoma, Chehalis, Shelton/ . otherwise some high clouds present over portions of W WA this morning heralding the approach of the next frontal system expected to move into the area late tonight. Current temps around the area still a bit on the chilly side this morning with temps generally ranging in the 40s although seeing a stray 50 pop up here and there. Although clouds will gradually increase today, should be enough heating to keep inherited forecast on track with highs today expected to climb into the lower to mid 60s this afternoon. Both ensembles and deterministic models remain on track with incoming front reaching the coast late tonight and slowly moving inland with more widespread precip and increased winds.

Inherited forecast is in line with both current thinking and latest models. No morning update needed. For additional forecast details, please refer to the Previous Discussion section below.

From Previous Discussion . Tuesday night and the start of Wednesday will remain a bit mild but a cold front that will be moving through will cool everything down to more seasonable temperatures by late in the day. The cold front is associated with a low that will be moving inland well to our North. While we will not be feeling the impacts from the low we will experience increased winds as well as widespread rain. Southerly winds will begin to pick up during the early morning hours by the coast and then late morning to early afternoon for the interior. The windy areas of the coast, and along the Northern Inland Waters (San Juans, W Whatcom/Skagit, Island Counties) will likely see gusts of around 25-30 mph. Elsewhere in the interior gusts will be noticeably lower and in the 15-20 mph range. Looking at the rain the heaviest is expected to occur in the Southern Olympics with 1-2 inches expected to fall over the course of the day. Considerably less rain is expected elsewhere with the North Cascades expecting 0.5-1 inch for the same time period. Rain will taper off and winds will ease late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning as we have a small break between approaching systems. The next frontal system will begin its approach towards Western Washington Thursday afternoon. This will once again create for breezy and wet conditions area wide. That said Thursday's temperatures will be on the warm side due to the warm front associated with the low that moves through the area early in the day.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. From Previous Discussion . If you were unsure if fall had arrived this weekend will surely bring an end to that thought. Multiple systems will track their way through the area that will keep the weather in Western Washington rather unsettled. Breezy winds and widespread rain are expected throughout the weekend and into early next week. Snow levels will be dropping down to 4500-5000 feet on Sunday and have the potential to drop a little lower for Monday. This will give the high elevations of the mountains another round of snow. At this time confidence is low on whether or not snow will be accumulating on any of the passes, but there is the potential.

AVIATION. The flow aloft will be southerly through tonight with a ridge east of the area and a trough offshore. VFR for most areas this morning with low clouds and patchy fog mainly around the southern Puget Sound area. LIFR cigs will clear in those areas through the morning with VFR this afternoon. High clouds and VFR into tonight. Cigs will lower into Wednesday morning to VFR and possibly MVFR as a front moves through the area. The winds will be mainly light through this evening.

KSEA . VFR cigs through this evening with high clouds over the area. Winds will be light northerly into tonight. JD

MARINE. High pressure over the inland waters will mOVE east today with a trough offshore. A series of strong systems will move across the area through the weekend. Small Craft Advisory winds along the Coastal Waters with gales tonight into Wednesday morning. Small Craft Advisory for the interior waters on Wednesday, though gales may be possible for the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca and northern inland waters. Another stronger system will move through the area on Thursday for gales along the Coastal Waters and SCA winds for the interior waters, though gales are possible. A strong system Saturday and potentially early next week for additional headlines.

Swells of less than 5 ft will increase tonight to 11-16 ft for the Coastal Waters with elevated swells through most of the week with the weather pattern. JD
