Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 251 PM PDT Wed Apr 21 2021
SYNOPSIS. Dry weather through tonight as an upper ridge slides south of the area. A trough will move across the interior Pacific Northwest tonight into Thursday for increasing onshore flow and clouds. A trough will move along the coast late week and over the weekend for rain chances into next week.
SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/. Mostly sunny skies this afternoon with marine stratus along the immediate coast. Onshore flow will increase tonight as a trough will move south across the interior Pacific Northwest. Stratus will move inland with widespread clouds across the area Thursday morning with areas of patchy drizzle possible. Temperatures will be cooler on Thursday with highs along the coast in the upper 50s to mid 60s across the interior. Ridging may briefly move through the area on Friday for drier weather, however onshore flow will continue with clouds spreading over the area as a system moves towards the area.
An upper low located near the Gulf of Alaska will slide south along the coast this weekend with increasing rain Friday night into Saturday. Steady rain is expected at times for most areas on Saturday as a front moves through and troughing develops offshore. Temperatures on Saturday will be below normal with the clouds and rain with highs in the low to mid 50s. JD
LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Troughing will be over the west through Monday of next week for showers across the area. Although Sunday and Monday won't feature steady rain, showers will be around, especially for the Cascades. In addition, convective showers are expected with the trough over the area, and the potential for isolated thunderstorms will need to be monitored Sunday and Monday, though guidance currently suggests limited instability. There is some uncertainty with the next system Tuesday or Wednesday with the ECMWF having a bit more ridging Tuesday than GFS ensembles, however, chance of rain expected Tuesday with another system Wednesday. Near normal temperatures into next week with highs in the mid to upper 50s. JD
AVIATION. Morning marine stratus has retreated to immediately along the coast and a few local pockets in the western and central Strait of Juan de Fuca. Otherwise, VFR conditions under mostly clear skies, with some scattered mid-level clouds. A weak disturbance moving south across B.C. will likely spread some additional cirrus over parts of the area. Otherwise, another push of marine stratus will likely bring IFR to MVFR ceilings into most of the lowlands.
KSEA . VFR under mostly clear skies and variable mid/high clouds through evening. Marine stratus likely pushes into the terminal by 15z Thursday and lingers through the morning, before lifting into the afternoon. Cullen
MARINE. Surface high pressure remains, with breezy north winds continuing over the coastal waters into Thursday, with advisory strength winds reaching the inner coastal waters this evening. Stronger onshore flow will likely bring fog to much of the Salish Sea overnight with low visibility into the morning hours. Advisory strength winds will again develop through the Strait of Juan de Fuca this evening. There is also some potential for gusty winds through the Strait of Georgia to strengthen across waters north of the San Juan Islands as the surface gradient strengthens this evening; for now have held the forecast at 20 kt and held off on an advisory, but will need to continue to monitor trends this evening.
Continued onshore flow with diurnally driven pushes through the Strait of Juan de Fuca will continue Thursday and Friday evenings. Stronger southerly winds arrive Friday over the waters ahead of the next front, which will cross the inland waters through Saturday. Pattern will remain active with a few systems crossing the waters into early next week. Seas over the coastal waters will likely build Thursday into the 7 to 10 ft range and remain rather steep with dominant periods around 8 to 9 seconds. Seas will then ease a bit into the weekend, but will become increasingly wind-driven late Friday and especially Saturday with the front.
Cullen
HYDROLOGY. No river flooding expected the next 7 days.
FIRE WEATHER. Onshore flow will increase tonight with increasing RHs across the area. A front will move through Saturday with an upper trough Sunday for more typical spring weather and alleviating the fire weather concerns for the area. JD
