Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 915 AM PDT Sun Aug 9 2020

SYNOPSIS. A dry and warming trend will commence today through Monday across Western Washington. A weakening frontal system will bring cooling temperatures and isolated showers Tuesday and Wednesday followed by a return to seasonal weather late this week.

SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. Clear skies over nearly all of W WA this morning . although some lingering marine stratus can be found at some coastal locations. Some locations are responding to these clear skies by running a couple of degrees warmer than yesterday while the clear skies of last night have left most obs sites with a hole to dig themselves out of . many running 1 to 6 degrees colder than this time yesterday. Forecast remains on track in spite of this though . as morning and afternoon heating should easily overcome this difference

Upper level ridging will continue to build over the area today . kicking off a warming trend that will run through Monday. Said ridge will flatten out on Monday allowing a weak trough and associated front to pass through the CWA Tuesday. Neither of the deterministic models nor ensemble solutions have precip associated with this system . however it will initiate a cooling trend over the area bringing afternoon high temps back down into the lower to mid 70s for the interior. Inherited forecast has some precip associated with this system over the north and central Cascades for Tuesday with the front . but will need to interrogate full suite of models to see where this precip comes from. This will not warrant any sort of morning update and would prefer not to remove it entirely to prevent the forecast from going back and forth . but current analysis also offers little evidence for any precip to occur. Will need to look at further and as such . any changes will appear in the afternoon forecast. 18

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. From Previous Discussion . An upper trough will shift through the region Wednesday and Thursday. There might be a few showers during this time but the main impact will be to keep highs slightly below normal and bring clouds at times. Upper heights will gradually rise across the area Friday and Saturday. There will be a corresponding minor warming trend with highs near normal on Friday and slightly above normal on Saturday. It will likely be dry both days but there is enough uncertainty in the ensembles to keep a slight chance of showers in the forecast for now.

Schneider

AVIATION. Tranquil morning for the terminals with some stratus hovering near HQM and some patchy fog intermittently affecting PWT and OLM. Any impacts from these conditions are subsiding this hour and will continue to do so thru the remainder of the morning. By afternoon, sunny skies will dominate the area. Widespread stratus will redevelop along the Coast tonight and spread down the Strait and into portions of the Sound Monday morning. Winds will be N around Puget Sound under 10kts (except BLI more S/SW) and W at CLM and HQM between 10-15kts.

KSEA . Clear. Stratus Monday morning currently expected to stay north of terminal. Wind N under 10kts.

Kovacik

MARINE. No changes were made to the marine forecast this morning. Recent satellite loop shows some stratus/low clouds hovering along the Coastal Waters this morning with some lingering patchy fog and low clouds around the Sound, especially the southern Sound. These clouds will dissipate by late morning/early afternoon yielding sunny skies across most waters. NW winds will remain right around Small Craft Advisory criteria across the Outer Coastal Waters this morning and will gradually spread into the Inner Coastal Waters this afternoon. Swells will also hover around 10 feet through the day across the Outer Coastal Waters. Another westerly push down the Central and Eastern Strait can be expected to begin late this afternoon, strong enough to yield Small Craft conditions. Previous discussion can be referenced to below:

Northwesterly flow will persist across the marine areas through at least the middle of the week. Several disturbances in that timeframe will yield increases in winds and seas today and again early this week, with advisory level conditions expected offshore. Swells will remain northwesterly through this timeframe with seas increasing to 8 to 10 feet offshore today and 9 to 11 feet on Monday. In addition, strong nocturnal westerly pushes will yield advisory level conditions in the Strait of Juan de Fuca into at least mid-week.

Kovacik/Pullin

HYDROLOGY. The daily hydrology discussion has ended until the start of the next rainy season; it will only be updated as needed until then.

SEW WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. WA . None. PZ . Small Craft Advisory from 3 PM this afternoon to 5 AM PDT Monday for Coastal Waters From James Island To Point Grenville Out 10 Nm-Coastal Waters From Point Grenville To Cape Shoalwater Out 10 Nm.
