KEY MESSAGES
- Weather remains active into the weekend with much cooler temperatures, gusty north to northeast winds, and chances for valley rain showers and light mountain snow.
- Overnight lows reaching freezing or below in many areas. Hard freeze expected for mountain valleys in northeast Washington and the Idaho Panhandle by Monday morning.
SYNOPSIS
Active pattern continues through the weekend. Blowing dust concern returns for Sunday. The colder air this weekend and early next week will bring freezing low temperatures to many areas. Drier weather next week, with moderating temperatures.
DISCUSSION
Today through Sunday: The cold front will continue to exit the region through the early morning. Colder will continue to move into the region and bring snow levels down to 4000-5000 ft by mid morning. Short term models are keeping shower chances through today for the higher terrain with a chance of mountain snow. Precip amounts are not expected to be very much as probability for a tenth of an inch range from 10-30 percent.
Snow amounts are generally up 1-2 inches but pockets of up to 4 inches are possible. Hikers and campers in the higher elevations should plan accordingly. By Sunday, the Low stalls over Southwest Conus and high pressure starts to nudge into the region from the West. Precip tapers off by Sunday afternoon.
Saturday and Sunday highs will be in the upper 40s and low 60s.
Overnight lows will be in the 30s to low 40s. Many areas will be in the upper 20s to low 30s Sunday night into Monday morning.
It will be a good to time to start putting away the hoses and sprinklers.
Winds will continue to weaken behind the front and switch northerly by this morning bringing gusty north winds of 25-35 mph through the Okanogan Valley and Waterville Plateau. Breezy conditions continue Sunday with gusty northeast winds across much of the region. Speeds will be slightly lower than Friday with gusts 25-35 mph across the Basin and Idaho Panhandle.
Monday through Friday: Ensembles are becoming better aligned for the upcoming week. The Low is expected to stay over Southwest Conus while ridging builds along the coast line through Wednesday. Ensembles are hinting at the ridge moving east as another trough begins to press into the region. It is not looking to bring any precip by the end of the week. The Inland Northwest will be under a dry fall like pattern with near normal temperatures. Highs will be in the upper 40s to low 60s for most. Some areas in the lower Central Basin could approach 70. Overnight lows will continue to chilly with a range of 30s to low 40s. /JDC
